I don't care for diesel exhaust and my wife absolutely HATES the smell, we didn't experience a problem with our L5030HSTC or L5740HSTC.

Good to know the earlier tractors have no smell as well, I don't have enough time with them to have said. The l40 I ran for a while did the usual black puff now and again and certainly was not bad.

Oh, I imagine they have a smell, it just doesn't make it into the cab. Our L5740 Tier IV puts out a lot more smoke on start-up than our L5030 did. On our M8540, it will put out a bit of black smoke on sudden engine load, so no doubt the exhaust is cleaner on the L60/M60. The Tier IV was only one of several reasons I bought before the L60 came out. What is important to me will be a negative for others I am sure; no intention to run the L60 down as it's a really good machine.

The L40 has less on it than the L60. IE emissions. I sure miss my 12valve cummins. If something broke, they were so easy to fix. And parts were much cheaper. If I had the option, I would pick the 5740. Mine does smoke at cold start, but then cleans right up even under heavy load.

if you can still get a 5740 then go for it. Known animal.

Around here no l40's left when I needed a tractor except a couple small ones.

I ended up getting a new (still in crate) L5740 with R4s, FEL, 2nd front hydraulic for future grapple and +/- snow blade. Paid $1K or so more than I thought market should be, but there aren't many left. I liked the smaller cab of the 5740 and the only thing I liked better on the 6060 was the loader control. The JD 4720 was probably too tall for my barn, as it has "regular' garage doors. I liked it OK, but I guess I'm just used to Kubotas. The JD pricing was very aggressive, but I liked the Kubota better overall. I have woods and the extra height of the JD would have been a minus.
Thanks for the info! Keeping my L4300 for now...

Congratulations on your new tractor, you sure are lucky to have found one. I will be interested in your impressions when you get some seat time.

Thanks. The dealer had the last 3 for miles around, hence the higher price. I plow with my Ranger (so far), so it probably won't get much use until spring.
