Understanding all the brands and manufacturers

Interesting. I would have sworn I read somewhere that NH was going back to Shibaura for their new compact tractors. And it HAS to be true if I read it on the internet!! ;)

Well, mea culpa.

Yeah, there was some questions and speculation regarding that ... and actually, the truth just came out only recently, so I see where you were coming from.

I had been under that same impression as well ...

I thought I read the exact same thing.

No, this is incorrect. LS is still building the tractors for NH. LS builds their own engine (under license from Mitsubishi) and decided not to build a tier 4 engine. They decided to buy from Shibaura instead, who already had a Tier 4 engine available. They made some minor tweaks to the tractor, including moving the fuel tank, and expanding the operators area a bit. Everything else basically remains status quo, including the contract with C-NH.

So Iseki and Mitsubishi bowed out of making tier 4 engines? So that leaves Shibaura, Yanmar, Kubota, AGCO/Sisu, Deere, Deadong?

Right, Daedong is building Tier4 engines, it's in their new series. I believe that Iseki and Mitsu are also going to be building them. However, the "read between the lines" impression I got was that LS either didn't want to spend the money to buy the Mitsu Tier4 engine license, AND/OR didn't want to retool to build them. Add that to the relationship Shibaura and C-NH have had for a long time, and I'm thinking that going with Shibaura engines was a pretty easy choice.

I have been reading a lot and trying to educate myself before buying. From what I gather Kubota and John Deere are the two main players, at least here in the US. They are not rebadged tractors so I guess that makes them better in some people's eyes. The other big manufacturer is Daedong and they make tractors that are rebadged and sold as Kioti, Bobcat, Case, New Holland,...more I'm sure. Oh, and I forgot about Mahindra. Not sure who makes those. Throw LS in the mix too as I've read they are very reliable also.

I don't know how you tractor guys keep up with all this!

All I wanted was a 28-38hp machine that would do some decent loader work, mow some, help me haul firewood. I only have about 5 acres of light woods, some hilly sections. I think, and please correct me if I'm wrong, I need something close to 3,000 pounds without any attachments. I wanted a pre-owned with no more than 500 hrs if possible with FEL. I'm fairly cheap so somewhere in the $12-16k range but don't want to buy anything that's gonna give me trouble.

Please help me understand the tractor world as it applies to my size of machine.

You can get a NEW Kubota L3200 with a loader for around $19,000 with 0% for 60 months or a $1200 rebate if you pay cash.

As TSO said below, I think Mitsubishi is building Tier 4 engines, but I think they were too expensive in LS's opinion.

The current open station models with 2 digits, the 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50, are made by LS. NH did not have LS build a cab model so they restarted their cab model line that are being made by Shibaura. They are the 4 digit Boomers 3000 Series with CVT, the 3040, 3045 and 3050. There was a thread showing the new for 2014 open station model Boomer 47 that is an LS Tier 4 with a Shibaura engine. Supposedly the Tier 4 models will not end with 0 or 5 but will be 47, 51, etc. Just what I have been able to piece together.

Yes, the Shibaura built CVT trans models (Boomer 35, 40, 45) come only in the "SuperSuite" versions and are quite pricey. Plus, they only come with CVT, which I am not a big fan of personally. Additionally, now that LS has cabs available for more of their tractors, I have a feeling that the SuperSuite models may phase out.

You can get a NEW Kubota L3200 with a loader for around $19,000 with 0% for 60 months or a $1200 rebate if you pay cash.
Or you could get an LS G3033 with loader (loader lifts 469 more lbs than the LA524 on the Kub) for roughly $16,000 and with a better warranty.
