I've often been allured by enticing thoughts of purchasing a pistol caliber carbine, .40 would be my preference, but when it comes down to figuring out the spending part I just can't justify it over the two M1 Carbines I already have. The M1 about the same length, same weight or lighter, but delivers 7.62 goodness with almost twice the velocity and energy. Also available in 5-40 round mags.

30 carbine IS pistol caliber. ;)

anyone got one of these?

I hear some people say they will take a uzi mag.

I hear others say no.. still others say an uzi mag will fit if modified.

yet others say only proprietary taurus mags...

I have an original Colt AR15 9MM Carbine. It can use Uzi mags that have been modified with a magazine release slot cut into it. They do not hold the bolt open after the last round. You may have similar issues with this weapon.

i agree. the uzi mag follower is sloped inthe back, whereas the taurus follower has a step in it for the hold open. when I relieve the metal so the mag can be inserted correctly without catching the hold open on the bolt, it will surely not contact the follower.. at least from what I can see.. and will close the bolt ont he last round fired.

not the end of the world.. :)

good observation though... I can tell you are familiar with uzi mags. :)

And with that. i have a question.. how hard is it to take the floor palts off so i can gut the spring and follower out to cut on the mag and then tackweld/solder/braze on a metal tab with a groove fo rthe mag catch. I don't want to cut on it with the follower and spring in.

thanks

This is going to take the post a little off topic, but it is on the subject of a pistol caliber carbine. I picked up a(nother) used Hi Point 9mm carbine that had a scope and an ATI stock on it (so it kinda looked like the Beretta CX4). The price was right and it also came with two magazines, so I thought "What the heck." Anyway, got it home and tried to shoot it and it would only shoot one round and it would eject the shell and almost load another round, but wouldn't quite close the bolt, so it wouldn't fire.

I called Hi Point to see about the warranty status and spoke with a couple of very pleasant gentlemen. They explained that their current policy regarding ATI stocks is that they will still warranty their product, but you have to buy a new stock from them. Their tactical stock was $60 and their classic stock was $20. Since we already had another 995 with a tactical stock, I opted for the $20 classic stock. They asked that all I send to them was the barrelled action. Oh yeah, it also didn't have any iron sights on it because those interfered with the scope (I guess).

So it cost $11 to ship it to them and they had it for about 3 weeks. When it came back, according the checklist that was enclosed, it was about 80% new parts, had a new stock, new sights, a sling, tool kit, and TWO magazines. I think the magazines usually cost about $15 to $17, so for the $31 I was into it form ($11 shipping + $20 for the stock), I got a rebuilt carbine with accessories. And I thought the turnaround was very quick.

I've taken it shooting a few times since it's return and have had zero issues. I know that Hi-Points are cheap guns, but I really can't find too much fault in them. I can just about guarantee that I'll be purchasing additional units in .40 S&W and .45 acp when I get enough pennies rolled, if nothing else just because of the superior warranty and customer service. I think the only negative to the Hi Points is along the subject of the OP, and that is a lack of hi-cap magazines. I've only ever seen 10 and 15 round ones, and I've heard more bad than good about the 15 round units.

I like the looks of the Taurus carbine, but it's a little spendy for me right now, compared to the Hi Points (obviously). Anyway, sorry for dragging the thread off topic, just wanted to report on my good interaction with Hi Point.

Good luck and take care.

Here is some interesting info. The MSRP is $898, Cheaper Than Dirt has one for $663.32. Cheaper Than Dirt has Taurus 24/7 17 round mags for $29.99 if they will actually fit.

Taurus CTG29 Carbine - Now Shipping

Taurus CTG29 Carbine CT9 Semi Auto Rifle 9mm 16" Barrel 10 Rounds Synthetic Stock Black Finish 390161CTG2

i think there is actually alot of dealer markup on those guns. i bought one at a show for hundreds less than msrp. I hears the g2 mags fit.. but then again.. I heard they don't too. they try for proprietary mag designs.. which i kinda dislike...

no problem off topic. it's a good discussion.

I have the 45acp ver of the hipoint. my shooting buddy has the 9. the only issue we have encountered was using aftermarket mags, or incorrect mags. The aftermarket 45acp mags that are marked for the pistol and do not have an orange follower.. will NOT work. only the orange follower mags work.

Mine came with 1 mag. I pought 2 more 10 rnd mags.. and 1 extended mag. the extended mag fits tighter than the 10's but does cycle and has loosened up. I do NOT believe it holds the bolt open on the last shot.

My 45acp ver is actually quite accurate on iron sights. so much so that i left it that way. for 50yrd and less plinking it is a great gun. so heavy that there is no felt recoil.
