You are a very good son Eddie Walker. That kitchen looks amazing and has a big WOW factor. Your mom likes Santa I see. So do I.

Thank you everyone for the nice compliments. What's funny is when I was framing up the ceiling, both my parents couldn't figure out what I was doing or why. I tried to explain it to them and draw diagrams of what it was going to look like, but they never got it. They figured out the beams in the living room when the sheetrock went in, but the kitchen was just to foreign and idea for them.

I have to admit that the beams in person look better then I had hoped for. The grain of the wood, the stain and the satin clear finish show up nicely and in my opinion, have a very rich look to them. My goal is to give them a modest sized home with a wow element to it that nobody expects.

Now I'm working on the mantel so I can get the rock done on the fireplace. I've also started building the built ins on either side of the fireplace. My original plan was to stain it to match the beams, but seeing the beams in place, and some of the rock started, I've changed my mind and I'm going to paint them white. Too dark if I stain them and I think they will blend in and blur out the fireplace that way. White should make the fireplace pop and be the main focal point of the room.

As a selling point for future jobs/projects...you might look into rendering software that lets you scan in standard technical drawings/plans and it will render 3d views inside and out...FWIW...

Eddie, I can't tell you how lucky you are to have both your parents. There is nothing quite like doing something that makes your parents proud and puts a smile on their faces. How I've longed for my mom and dad to see what I've accomplished with this property I own, but it is not to be. My mother used to say that if there's anything a man can do, I can do it. That just made me swell with pride. Unfortunately, I lost her in 1983 and my father in 1995. I know they are looking down on me from above, but how I'd love to introduce my sweet wife to them and have them over for dinner. It's not to be and I don't dwell on it, but when I see you and your parents working side-by-side together on that house, I just can't help but be jealous/happy for you. In many ways, seeing you and them together gives me vicarious pleasure. So, give them a virtual hug for me and tell them it's "just because."

Eddie,
We see the love there and know our parents would be proud to see what You are doing for your parents. Y'alls relationship is what this country needs more of.

Love the beams -- top notch work as usual!

Beautiful work, Eddie. And ditto on what Jim said. I lost my dad in 1999 before we built anything on our land. My oldest granddaughter was born 2/3/00, she is 13 now and he never met her or the other 3.

Very nice progress Eddie! Kitchen looks 100% finished.

One possible suggestion for the mantle mount... There are these keyhole type mounts often used for Newel posts. It is a square piece of steel with countersunk holes for screws and a keyhole cutout in it. You route that into the floor and then drive the appropriate fastener into the bottom of the post. The fastener fits into the keyhole slot and when you knock it home, it tightens up. Could be a real nice way to hold up the mantle. Obviously you need a few of them and be able to lag bolts into studs securely for this, but you are going to need good support in any case. This way it is removable in the future if need be (if you remember which way to whack it... Could make it up or to the side).

Here - I found them with a quick web search

I'm very fortunate to still have both of my parents. We've had a few scares, but everything has worked out. Having them live behind me has turned out a lot better then I had expected. They have their space, and we have ours, but we also do things for each other that I've really come to appreciate.

As for the mantel, I've decided to go with 3 heavy duty metal brackets that I'm lagging into the back of the mantel and then into the wall. I notched the back of the log last night after I finished sanding it. I also stained it after I took this picture and will start putting on the layers of finish coat as soon as it's warm enough.

Eddie

It'll be a beautiful mantel. It looks to me as if it would be very heavy, but knowing you, I'm sure it'll be strong enough.
