House for my Parents

We put in 5/8'' lag screws in all of our joists. I then made a paper template and transferred the holes from the wall to the mantle. Drilled the mantle, test fit the mantle, and then filled the holes with the highest epoxy I could find and set it in place. Let it dry overnight and it has not moved.

I went with Poplar for the beams and stained it with Minwax in English Chestnut and three coats of clear. They slide over the structural beams to add a little wow to the ceiling. The beams look very similar to the tile floors.

I use poplar a lot for baseboards & trim
seems to hold stain pretty well and is cost effective

Eddie the pictures of the kitchen area in your folk's new house shows that your mom is not only busy at building a house, but also making a warm and inviting home. You do know that I think she is Super Woman in disguise, don't you? Those faux beams you built look perfect. Methinks your parents and you are going to have many things to celebrate this Christmas Season. They may find things a bit boring when all the work is done, or perhaps they'll just lie down for a long winter's nap and dreams of Christmas's to come.
