Why the durability of an industrial engine ? people that buy diesel for bragging rights, dont want a 4 cylinder, they would prefer the sound of a cheaper automotive style V8 while driving a less durable engine than the industrial inline 6....
Well I think this begs the question, is it a converted/modified/upgraded existing gas block? I find it hard to believe Cummins would build a lightweight diesel that. But like GM way back when, they could do something dumb like put in a block that can't be resleeved. A bunch of those "light duty" two stroke diesels wound up in trucks, and seemed to do ok, but never had the durability reputation of the heavyweight Detroit Diesels. But Renze, you are right, they were really nice sounding diesels. And smooth too. Just don't overheat them and warp the head or you are removing the engine and shipping it out instead of an inframe overhaul. Is there info on that new Cummins diesel out yet?
I bet Isuzu has a proven 4-5 litre inline diesel also that GM could use, but not invented here may be an issue.
And if you could spec an M series 135 hp Kubota engine in your next p/u, I bet that would be a seriously long lasting engine. But then so would a John Deere equivalent, and let's face it, the big three are unlikely to pay for that kind of quality. And I'm sure those tractor engines would make for an interesting engine compartment. Seeing those engine swaps on YouTube is pretty interesting.
I guess we've gotten to the point where the environmentalists want us to produce vehicles with net negative emissions.
Meaning drive this truck through LA and the air coming out the pipe is cleaner, not dirtier. How's that for an answer to China's problem? Apparently they have catalytic converter technology now that will really do this, cleaner going out than in. So it will become the car and truck public's responsibility to pay five grand more for scrubbers built into their vehicles.
All for the public good. Hear Hear.
Kind of makes you want to be on a remote tropical island with your very compact truck, with a nice Cummins B210 under the hood. Totally mechanical, likely EMP proof. The engine would likely outlast your children if cared for.
