Help! Zero turn mower help

I have the previous version before the Raptor (Sport), and while it's not a full-blown commercial model, it's still a step up from box store machines....

wasn't aware of that, thanks, no doubt you're right. as w/tractors, good to have so much choice, & forums like this to help see the forest for the trees

Looks like a great deal. Its basically the same mower as the Snapper Pro S200 - 61 inch cut. Ferris and Sapper Pro are both owned by Briggs and Stratton and are made to the same specs. The Ferris units are more of the cadilac models compared to the Snapper Pros. Great Products.

So i emailed about the ferris and this is the response:

"I put 450 on the ad but it is probably closer to 350, I just would rather be sure it isn't understated.
It has been serviced every season but by places like Cavalier equipment, we also used a local shop in Ashand last season, I put new blades on myself. I don't think I have any receipts saved. We are moving out of state is the reason I am selling, I never planned on selling it so never worried about receipts etc. thanks"

If it were me, I would very seriously consider that one. That's a nice mower. Try offering $3500 and see what happens.

I am not a fan of them of the Vanguard series.

You are better off with a Kohler or Kawasaki.

Of course any zero turn discussion would not be complete without mentioning the John Deere 997. Good, reliable, durable, and reasonably priced.

The Vanguard is a commercial engine and I'd take it over ANY Kohler. Personally, I'd prefer a Kawasaki or, even better, a Kubota diesel. But the Vanguard is a good solid motor that should last a long time.

I have had a 50" Dixie Sliver Eagle for about 12 years. It has worked well gore me. I have a lot of obstacles to mow around and feel a larger deck would be a hindrance.

I have the Gravely Pro Turn 152 and love it. Regardless of which you choose I strongly suggest getting the full suspension seat. Most commercial versions now come standard with it.

That has to be some kind of scam ($1200 or $3500) would be a scam on a mower of original cost more than $9000. MY IS700Z was over $7K and this is much bigger. I would be extremely wary of this. It could be stolen if selling that cheap or just an outright scam like you see on Craigslist. That model just came out last year so it is not more than one season old. No one is going to take a $7,000 hit on a mower just because they are moving, trailer rentals aren't that expensive or even hiring a hot shot trucker to haul it wouldn't be that much.

I agree. Those sorts of scams are all over Craigslist in my area. When I was shopping for a TLB, I saw several $15k - $25k machines advertised for $3,500 - $5,000.

The easy way to flush out the scammer up front is to tell them you want to come look at it and ask them where they are. Invariably, you'll get some story about the seller being out of town or the item being at some far away location, blah, blah, blah.

Run away from those deals. Fast.

I tried to get it as part of the house deal, but at the time he said no. Of course, now he is changing his tune as his wife says it will take up too much garage space. So around that - I think it is a 40ish" deck. Not sure on model though. Any to stay away from? Once I get the model number I will let you all know. I have no idea what he going to ask for it but I am hoping y'all will help me figure out a reasonable price so that I am prepared to buy it or say no if he is too high for the year/model/hours.

I threw my advice in on a similar ZT question on this forum today. If speed is your priority, obviously "size matters". However, if it is a multi use cutter, a wide deck does not usually work well around the house. I find a 44" works pretty good there and have a 52" for the rest of the farm before I get to tractor mounted mowers.

As size goes up so does everything else. I will say that the wider decks work better for working fences, especially barbed wire where the tires on the left side can sustain some nasty cuts from running along the wire and a wide deck helps to put the cutter out beyond the rear tire.

Engines are not all that different. My preference as I said was Honda; didn't run any Yammies. But they all work ok. I use the recommended 10W-30 multi grade oil but use full synthetic. This to me is the only oil for air cooled engines (and all the rest of my engines on the farm also). Mine gets changed once a year and it is still somewhat honey colored when changed. Paraffin based oils just can't take the heat, break down early (for me) and turn black. For me they require 2-3 changes per season and I quit liking to change my oil any more.

Am I the only one with a wright stander? It's an absolute beast. I'd much rather be on it than our exmark. Both have the 23hp Kawasaki motor. The wright has to be the simplest piece of machinery I have ever owned! Had over 2300hrs.

I have the smallest, cheapest Toro, but it's all I need for a little city lot, and I do like having a dealer nearby that I can depend on. And I like the fact that I was able to download the entire parts list from the Internet.

I think we have about the same toro. If you don't mind.. would you pm me that parts list link
