disc plow

hillers are a bit of a different animal.

enough weight will be needed to make use of traction too.

a 40 hp tractor that is light and can't get traction may plow worse than a perfectly ballasted 30hp machine.

Yep. That was my point. I've plowed many, many acres with an 8N and 2 bottom moldboard plow. Can't remember their HP, 24 maybe??

8n, 27 pto depending on who you quote. 23 for the 2n/9n if using 2n/9n head..

I agree. I assume the OP is talking about a disc plow as pictures in one of the earlier posts show that have 30+inch diameter discs. Totally diff than hilling disc attachments. They require considerably less HP/weight than a moldboard plow.

We used to pull 2 16" turn plows with our old Jubilee all day long 20.2 HP but tractor data says 26.8 at the drawbar which I find hard to believe.

Dad pulled a set of Ferguson 3pth 2 bottom disk plows, 26'' disks, with a nearly new gas 3000 ford, 14.9 x 28 ballasted rears. He pulled it in 2 or 3 gear and the Ford "didn't want no more". Plowing 8-10 inches in mostly Baxter clay soils. The plows were very heavy and made the tractor light in the front. In my experience disk plows leave a field very rough and hard to disk.

a jube with the 134 red tiger has about 33 hp belt anyway.. 2 16's is quite a load..... pre worked earth or sand?

Used a borrowed 2 disk plow to do my field with my L2850. Needed 4 wheel drive. No problems. However, I agree with the rough field. Had to put the seat belt on to run the disk.

You're moving the same amount of dirt in a disc hiller with discs opposed as you are with the discs parallel to each other. So, a given hp/drive (2wd heavier tractor or 4wd lighter tractor) will pull it.

Problem with a lighter tractor is that the side force generated by the parallel discs could throw the tractor into not going straight. That's why I said that a disc plow with a good trail wheel may work on a light tractor.

This is what my little Gravely tractor had with a single rotating plow, a trail wheel of sorts that kept the tractor going straight.

It wasn't a "trail wheel" on the Gravely, but a leading set of wheels. With at least one wheel up against the ridge made by the previous plow run, the machine would go straight.

Both, pre-worked for years and also fresh cut in fields not touched in years. Some of the soil was sandyish!

pre-worked and sandy are a bit easier to turn. lets you get away with less engine to plow ratio...
