As good as a video might be, having a qualified welder right beside you is still the best way to learn welding. A video is a great learning tool but just can't teach you the same as someone in person. You could watch a 100 videos trying to learn welding and I bet an hour with Shield Arc would teach you more than 100 hours of video's could.

Chucke,
I've watched most of these videos but, sometimes have trouble finding the one to watch next. Thanks for puting them in order here at TBN.

Love your vids on youtube. Especially the torture testing of the China plasma cutter. Keep putting out the vids. I've searched youtube pretty thoroughly and yours are by far the most beneficial to the beginning welder. Keep up the good work.

Personally I don't think there is anything better than one on one instruction! Nothing like having someone stand right behind you, reach around and grab your hand, and make the weld for you. I've taught several guys how to weld in just a few session they could pass the state structural welding tests.
Once you learn how to read the puddle, and understand what it takes to make correction on the fly, you got it made!;)

It at least gives people a clue and for those not having someone to "teach them" on a personal basis, it has its place. I am sure you are aware of all the "painting "shows on television. I used to go crazy self lamenting "these are not proper painting techniques" "How dare they presume to teach people". I was missing the point entirely. This was about teaching people a simple way of painting that made them believe "hey, I can do this" This gave countless people a joy in their lives they never would have had and increased the "painter base" exponentially . Videos kind of act the same way and at least give people a "leg up" on something they thought they could never do. From there it's a matter of personal proficiency and if it leads to personalized lessons all the better. These kinds of things at least provide the catalyst and ChuckE is funny to listen to as a fringe benefit.

Not to burst any skilled welder's bubble but I haven't the time available to coordinate a class or fit into an instructors schedule. I have my own schedule and every welder available to me in my own garage thanks to my son welding. He "correctly" thinks I am a dolt when it comes to welding and of course I am.. His schedule and mine again don't mix well and we'd rather be outside doing something together than having him teach his dad welding on those occasions we have free time at the same time. I feel I can get good start from what I have watched him weld and the explanations received from him and these type of videos. I will never pretend that these videos are the end all be all of welding but I am pretty sure from them I can get two pieces of metal stuck together to my satisfaction. Now if anyone is willing to be paid for lessons at say 10pm to 1am or so then I'm all in for lessons. But so far no one wants to operate within those hours and that's what I have given myself for playing with welders.

Well said from a humble (truly) expert. Personally, I would love to have one on one instruction, but the videos have their place as a primer BEFORE the one on one. Not only do I appreciate all of the expertise of experts here and their willingness to share on TBN, I also appreciate that the experts do not skewer the alternate instruction mediums.
