Ford 450 vs Ram 3500

would be nice if Ford would do some work on the 6.7L Powerstroke C&C engines. They are in DESPERATE need of some updates. Need a more reliable turbocharger, cylinder heads, oiling system and make an exhaust brake available on the C&C trucks as well.

In the test, they did two different runs towing a heavy load. One in the desert and one at high altitude. The one in the desert the Ford completed in 12 minutes 17 seconds and the Ram did the same run in 12 minutes and 20 seconds. You could call this a tie except the Dodge had to use the brakes less and had cooler brakes at the end.

Pulling the Eisenhower grade the Dodge did it in 10 minutes and 31 seconds and the Ford did it in 11 minutes and 44 seconds. Both trucks had hot brakes, the Dodge 740 degrees and the Ford brakes were 1105 degrees.

They also had an article talking about next years Ford 450. It has quite few improvements coming and I expect it will at least do as well as the Ram if not better. I don't know this for a fact, but I'm guessing the D-max would not have been competitive in this testing at all.

Both trucks were top of the line and within $500 in price of each other. They were just short of $70,000. The Ford was about $500 more than the Dodge. They don't exactly give these things away but if you want to tow heavy and have the money they would both make great trucks.

i think you will find that endemic to ALL dadge ram dash's My 98 dash spiderwebbed and cracked in badly. every person I konw with a 96+ ram has done that...

ALL is a rather bold statement. I guess my 97 was lucky since the dash didn't crack in the 11 years when I sold it and as of a couple months ago still hadn't cracked.

Were cat engines available in any one ton trucks?? I always thought they were used in the big rigs-
everything from logging trucks, large Wreckers and 18 wheelers- and have never heard anything bad about the Cat engines either

You talk to owners of the newer Cat emission engines [C13-C15] and you may need to dodge a few rocks that are heaved at you! Terrible mileage and if you don't put the truck into regen when it wants to do it, it will shut down and you have to get it towed to the dealer for a reset. They have been poor for the oilfields at best. These trucks have to sit and run all day at 1200rpm and the new emission crap does not allow for that. CJ

Once you get to the 15,000lb range the d-max [unless modified] was less than impressive to me. CJ

Ya, I laughed when I read that statement.
I had a new 94/96/98, and a new 2001, no dash cracking what so ever.

Actually it was only a problem after the restyled dash (same time they added 3rd door on ex cabs iirc), which was '98. They recalled at least one year model because the dash cracked.

Yeah try explaining to a company man that you are shutting down his multi-million dollar frac job because you have a truck that has gone into regen and you can't get it to start back up to run it's PTO. I had to explain it so many times I carried print outs explaining the emissions systems to them. IIRC CAT has completely gotten out of making road engines because of all the emissions controls.

laugh or not. search the internet. I'm not the only one who see's it. every dodge ram from that era i've seen has a cracked dash.

keep in mind. florida is probably a different climate than ill. 11m 29 days of sun shine

hmm.. did someone email this to mark cuda.. he apparently has never seen a dash problem, ever.. on a dodge... he might want to know about the recall..
