Labs must have internal compasses that are hard to calibrate. Some that we have owned over the years required several revolutions before settling down to business -- but they have stayed homed in when they did lock on the signal.

Our Corgi ALWAYS aligns herself so her head is pointing forward for defecation with both feet on the ground. For urination she normally lifts her left leg slightly.
