U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star to assist vessels in Antarctica

An excerpt from the announcement:ALAMEDA The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star is responding to a Jan. 3rd request from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) to assist the Russian-Flagged Akademik Shokalskiy and Chinese-Flagged Xue Long that are reportedly ice-bound in the Antarctic. The Russian and Chinese Governments have also requested assistance from the United States.

Coast Guard Pacific Area Command Center received the request Thursday evening from AMSA after they evaluated the situation and determined there is sufficient concern that the vessels may not be able to free themselves from the ice. AMSA has been coordinating rescue operations since the Akademik Shokalskiy became beset with ice on Dec. 24. The Polar Star will cut short its planned stop in Sydney to support the AMSA痴 request for assistance.

With the way our current POTUS regime has depleted the military preparedness of the U.S. we are very lucky we still have at least this one icebreaker left.

Able to break off 21 feet of ice by backing and ramming. Very impressive.

hmmm, global warming. The Antarctic is melting.

At least the fuel were burning there to get the ships out will help raise the temps down there and may help free the ships.

Global warming? Is that why most of this country is so cold now?

In central Illinois, we are suppose to see -18* has not been that cold since the 1980s.

Yes but the irony of the whole thing is that the reason the research ship was there was to gather data to compare it with Mawsons data from an expedition very early last century. They were hoping that comparison of the data would support their theories that there was a lessening of the ice mass in the Antarctic and there is global warming.

Oh the ironing.
