Thanks, some good advice here.

Is Kerosene the same as No. 1 diesel? Same as No. 1 fuel oil?

CobyRupert,

Kerosene, No. 1 Diesel (ASTM D975), No. 1 Fuel Oil, and Kerojet A are similar, but not the same. The distillation curves & additives are all different. Don't cut No. 2 Diesel Fuel with kerosene, and always add supplemental additive. You need lubricity all the time, and this time of year anti-gel. I also recommend cetane improver as most of our engines are indirect-injected and need the help. Esp. in cold ambients.

You're in good hands with RalphVa, Coyote Machine, and aczlan.

I worked in industrial fuels & lubricants & can vouch for those guys.

Here you go ---> Table Definitions, Sources, and Explanatory Notes

Unfortunately, ASTM charges $60 for standards, I used to have some hardcopies somewhere. Not only are the distillation curves significantly different, the additives are too. Use only diesel fuels for diesel engines - not home heating oils or kerosene.

In general, kerosenes are lighter, and both kerosene and No. 1 home heating oil have no required diesel engine additives.

Exerpts:
Kerosene - A light petroleum distillate that is used in space heaters, cook stoves, and water heaters and is suitable for use as a light source when burned in wick-fed lamps. Kerosene has a maximum distillation temperature of 400 degrees Fahrenheit at the 10-percent recovery point, a final boiling point of 572 degrees Fahrenheit, and a minimum flash point of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Included are No. 1-K and No. 2-K, the two grades recognized by ASTM Specification D 3699 as well as all other grades of kerosene called range or stove oil, which have properties similar to those of No. 1 fuel oil. See Kerosene-Type Jet Fuel.

No. 1 Distillate - A light petroleum distillate that can be used as either a diesel fuel (see No. 1 Diesel Fuel) or a fuel oil.

No. 1 Diesel Fuel: A light distillate fuel oil that has distillation temperatures of 550 degrees Fahrenheit at the 90-percent point and meets the specifications defined in ASTM Specification D 975. It is used in high-speed diesel engines generally operated under frequent speed and load changes, such as those in city buses and similar vehicles.
No. 1 Fuel Oil: A light distillate fuel oil that has distillation temperatures of 400 degrees Fahrenheit at the 10-percent recovery point and 550 degrees Fahrenheit at the 90-percent point and meets the specifications defined in ASTM Specification D 396. It is used primarily as fuel for portable outdoor stoves and portable outdoor heaters.

Ran into a similar situation with the BX2660 last week when it was in the single digits. Put it in the unheated shop with a 300W floodlight pointing up at the main filter. Poured a dose of PS911 in the tank, let it sit overnight, the fired it up in the morning.
Finished filling it from the big tank (which has white power service in it) and it was fine.

Gonna start calling you "Mythbuster". There are doubters. But I believe. Have been told too many stories like yours. Just hope I NEVER get to test the theory!!!

Can you cut it with kerosene if you also add the anti-gel with lubricate? Is that enough lubricant, given that it's in the No.2 and you're only cutting it about 30%?
Seems like there's a lot of stories on here about people who do. (Though, I guess you don't know how much the No.2 was already cut at the station, but I know it's not good for -20F.)
The problem is, I don't know where to get small quantities of No. 1, but kerosene is available.

Just run white bottle Power Service and don't worry about it.

My NH tractor quit running a couple of days ago when it was +30F outside, found a little water in the bottom of the fuel filter bowl and a little more in the inlet line to the filter. Drained line, replaced filter, ran fine in the -18 air/-40 wind chill the next two days. Have been using Power Service white jug all along. Will be switching to Stanadyne Performance for a regular additive, and will keep a bottle of Power Service 911 red jug on standby as soon as I can find some. Seems there was a big run on it when the polar vortex hit this area this weekend.

Power Service's website says that if the filter gels up, remove the filter bowl, empty it, and refill with 1/2 PS911 and 1/2 diesel. Add the appropriate amount to the tank. Run the engine.

I'm very, very picky about fuel. I always buy my diesel at the same place. Always run additive in my truck starting in the fall. I get parnoid if traveling with my truck and have to buy fuel somewhere I don't know. I go to large truckstops and fill at the truck pumps rather than the car pumps. Don't know if that helps, but it makes me feel better.
