U.S. Coast Guard to the Rescue!

Its kind of like the turbine engine car. It was highly efficient and very powerful.... but it was so loud you couldn't hear yourself think, and the exhaust would melt the paint of the car behind you at stop lights.

Actually, if you are referring to the Chrysler turbine car specifically,
It wasn't efficient and wasn't particularly powerful, 130 hp (although torque was around 430 lbs/ft,
0 to 60 in 12 seconds
it was fairly quiet but sounded like a vacuum cleaner,
and the exhaust temps were lower than a typical car due to the regenerators.
Check Youtube for Jay Leno's Garage where Jay takes one for a drive. It's a pretty neat video, as are a lot of them.

I went to see the Chrysler turbine engine car when it was on display at a dealer in Dallas in the early '60s. One thing that struck me as odd at the time was that it looked more like a Ford Thunderbird than anything Chrysler was building at the time. And of course I guess we all saw it in the Elvis Presley movie.

I've only seen video of it running. Would like to see it run in person. I'm pretty sure I saw one at the Henry Ford museum, but only on display.
Here's a link to Jay Leno's garage with a very good story, video, old promotional stuff, etc...

Its about 25 minutes long, but a great history lesson, and debunks the myth that it was loud and melted the cars behind it. It was surprisingly quiet and the exhaust was cooler than a piston car. He explains all that in the video. Grab a beverage and watch it if you have the time. A great video.

Yeah, I was just over there watching that. Very cool and debunks a lot of myths.

Excellent video, lot of good info.

Great video, but it makes you wonder how those negative rumors about the exhaust temp, and loud running sound get started in the first place.

By people like me repeating what they heard and didn't investigate first. :p Its hard to trace back an original rumor. Just look in the politics forum!

The turbine program evolved over time. Chrysler's '63 Turbine Car wasn't their first attempt, but was about a ten year evolution from earlier experimental cars. I think it was about the 4th generation, maybe? Perhaps the rumours were accurate from earlier versions of the turbine prior to addition of regenerators.

Here is a little info on the Ford Nucleon. Nuclear powered car that never was. Can't you just see some "shade tree hot rodder" saying "hey lets remove that dang shielding to make her go faster!"
