Lots of truck used dealers over my way. Your not too far away.
Drivers Village, Truck_r_us, Billy Whittaker, Reymore Chevy, Burdick Ford to name a few.
Drivers Village in Cicero area has multiple dealerships all on one lot. so various brands of trucks are available. They are also one of the largest in the area. Might pay to give them a call. Most any 1/2T will haul what you want. My 1/2T is rated to tow 9,600 with a 5.3L

True, but they will probbaly be NY trucks and (having been spoiled by living in GA for a few years and experiencing salt free vehicles), I would really like to get a truck that didn't start its life up here.

If I remember corectly, the trucks in that early 2000's era bed sizes with a Quad or Crew cab were:
Ford - 5'6"
Ram - 6'3" or 8' (only truck of that era to offer a quab cab long bed, the others were extended cab only with the long bed)
GM - 6'6"

I had an 03 Ram 1500 quad cab short bed (6'3") and its exactly 8' long with the tailgate down which worked great for my needs. Plenty of power from the HEMI with 3.73 gears and averaged 14-15mpg. Other than normal maintenance, only replaced two front wheel bearings in 130k miles of service. Upgraded to a 3/4 ton for a bigger camper.

Those Rams with the quad cab and 8' bed are tough to find but probably tougher to park.

I just saw an '04 chevy 2500 ec lb 4x4 with 8.1. I think it had around 85k... asking 9 grand. I almost had to go see it. Pictures looked good, but I guess you never know.

check the brake lines for rust and the rear frame rust out on them
