Any good uses for used Mneral oil?

I'd keep it quiet if it was me. I had a chance to take 500 gallons from a local college transformer being replaced. The contractor doing the job just wanted the oil gone. They called me knowing I burn waste oil. I figured best not to take it because even though I accept small amounts of waste oil to burn it is illegal in our state to accept anyone's oil without first testing it for chlorinated solvents. The paper trail would have led to me directly. Also the question persists what about PCBs? Good luck I would just want the stuff GONE up the chimney if it was my choice, sooner the better. Good read here scroll down to PCBs: Transformer oil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Fred

+1 on PCB warning. If it came from an unknown transformer I would not have it on my property.

x2 on the transformer oil i deal with HV and we have a large pulse transformer that contain 50gals of transformer oil at times i have to pump it out to service the componets inside. Nasty stuff i wouldnt burn it or have it on my property.

I was reluctant to post where the oil was coming from, but did anyway.

The oil has been tested and contains no pcb,'s. Just pure mineral oil.

I remember years back in the 70's about an incedent of someone trying to get rid of some transformers that were filled with oil also PCB's. If memory serves me right I believe the PCB's were added to the oil to keep it from boiling. The salvage yard operator wanted nothing to do with them. Once these PCB's are released by what ever, into what ever, they are there forever. They will absorb into any thing. Case in point the fish (lake trout) in the Great Lakes are still absorbing this stuff.
If this oil was tested and supposedly PCB free, I think I'd want the tester to bet his life on it. Even then my concern about this is, is he stating this just to get rid of it?
Don't get me wrong because I'm as frugal as anybody and hate to see anything go to waste.

Just my opinion and have a great day!

Did you receive copy of the test results? Was it from a reputable lab?

Seems like a big risk?

As Morry would say "The test results are in". One would hope that these are accurate. Being the company you work for did the testing, you must have some degree of confidence in the results.
If indeed the oil is PCB free, thats good.
If for some reason the test results were goofed up, then it's health issues. Effects of exposure to PCB's takes time. Unfortunately once its in your body or system, its to late.

Just my opinion. Have a great day!!!

i think they stopped using mineral oil containing pcb's in transformers two or three decades ago. i'd bet the utilities, etc. have pretty much removed from service the bulk of the old ones by now. i'm sure the chance exists that there could still be the few old ones around, but if a test came back clean i'd think it was correct.

if you had an old un-fussy diesel you could probably burn it too. i bet an old lister would chug away just fine on it.
