Well thanks for all the input.

Again - NON-LETHAL

So far they have not been "packs of stray dogs". The last one was a pit bull that was only hip high at the shoulders.

I've lot's of experience with "shoot to kill", none with "shoot to wound".

Part of my "problem" is that I prefer to keep the doors open on my sheds for ease of "walk about".

Thus I've usually three or four shed doors open all day that "loose" animals come wandering in to.

Armadillo's, birds etc scare off easily. It's dogs about 60 pounds plus that pause when I yell that bother me. I've little against using the 12 gauge when threatened, but it is definite overkill for "warning off".

Also if I get a suitable pistol I will probably use it frequently to bust wasp nests.

Any stray dog causing harm can be responded to with lethal force. Don't feel any remorse or cry for the owner, if any.
I like the use of paint ball guns on the others because it discourages them usually without permanent damage, and rather definitively marks them so you can prove to your neighbor their dog was up to no good, and to the animal control people that the animal was running free and uncontrolled.

Or for more deterrent, load the paintball gun with pepper spray paintballs (ie: Pepperball )

I've used lead ball guns before with good success. Oh wait! That was a shotgun,,

A large box trap is probably cheaper than a suitable gun. Just a thought.

That is about the dumbest idea I have ever heard. Even a stupid animal like an armadillo wont go into a box trap. Besides that marauding dogs don't hang around for you to put up a trap nor do they want to go into a box without something in it that they want to kill. It's not like you can stake out a chicken or goat in one for a month or so and wait for a wild dog to come by and then see if he will go for it.
Wild dogs are more akin to muggers wandering about town looking for an easy opportunity to wreak havoc on the weak and helpless. If one of those attacked me, I wouldn't hesitate to use deadly force on them either.
