Mace works
And handy to carry around.

Uh uhhh! I'm retired and I weight over 250 pounds...I doubt anyone would consider me handy to carry around. (Although I do like the idea of being carried!) :D

That is about the dumbest idea I have ever heard. Even a stupid animal like an armadillo wont go into a box trap. Besides that marauding dogs don't hang around for you to put up a trap nor do they want to go into a box without something in it that they want to kill. It's not like you can stake out a chicken or goat in one for a month or so and wait for a wild dog to come by and then see if he will go for it.
Wild dogs are more akin to muggers wandering about town looking for an easy opportunity to wreak havoc on the weak and helpless. If one of those attacked me, I wouldn't hesitate to use deadly force on them either.
I've caught many animals in box traps, including a stray dog. He followed a trail of dog food right into the trap. It clearly depends on the animal. I don't get the impression that the OP is referring to a vicious wild dog.

I just wonder if even a paint ball gun would get you arrested for animal cruelty. After all the dog may become embarrassed with a splat of paint on its coat.

I have very little experience with paint ball guns, so would a spring powered paint ball pistol have enough impact to make an impression on a dog? I've seen some dogs that after bring hit with a thrown rock that will run about 20 feet or so, then meander back.

Having pepper spray in the paint ball, that when broken sticks to the coat, I think that would work. If not a tazer/cattle prod would be a good persuader.

I use to use a Crosman CO2 pellet pistol with those flat nose target pellets. They would sting enough to make the dog think twice about coming back around.

I high enough powered one will...Got knocked out by one in a tournament (very temporary fortunately)..Got hit right in the temple (nice shot, whoever the $%&# was that did it :grumpy:). Back before all of the protective gear they have now. Maybe that explains my state now.
