ATV / UTV for hunting

Darn you guy's make it sound like I am missing out on something here but for hunting it would do me no good cause the poachers would hear me coming. When we went tractor shopping at John Deere we seen one of the four wheels types and talked about buying one for our daughter to drive up to the front yard to catch the school bus.

One of my Honey Do's is she said she wants to be able to drive all around the property but that will require me to lay down two bridges to cross the creeks. From what I have read from you guys do they come with a ROPS system, and are they gas.or battery? They sound like fun to drive one.

I would suggest you look at a mini truck. They have heaters!!!

My brother got one on our deer lease, and after riding in his, I had to have one. You can comfortably ride 2 people in one, and there is lots of room in the bed, and they will go almost anywhere a ATV will go (if you get a 4WD).

I paid $1000 for mine, but had to do some work on it, and now I have about $3500 invested in it, and I LOVE it!!

One thing about the mini trucks, is that parts are somewhat hard to find. You can't run to the local auto parts store and get parts. You will have to find parts online, and sometimes they will have to come from Japan. I had to get a windshield and a radiator from Japan.

If you take some time to look, you can usually find one in good shape, but you'll have to do some looking.

I think I've concluded that I'm going to start with a plain ol ATV like a used Honda Foreman 400/450/500 or a Yamaha Kodiak. Much like tractor purchases, price starts to creep up with every level of want. I should be able to pick up a decent used one for $3000-$3500. Maybe one day a UTV will be in the cards and if I play it right the used ATV should sell for what I paid for it.

You would be able to supplement the ATV's capacity with one of those 40"X48" trailers. A few years back, my hunting party hauled out 350 pounds+ of boned-elk, 3 hunters (with equipment), and driver with my 2001 Honda 350 Rancher and trailer. It wasn't pretty; but a whole-lot better than walking (I plus-up the tire pressure during hunting season).

They can be modified for better cross-country mobility.

I have the RTV now but sometimes, I still regret not bringing my trailer.

I don't have a dog in the fight nor do I want to recommend a particular brand/store, but I could PM you a link if you are interested.

Yes, if you get a trailer exactly sized for the 'wheeler/utv, you can use it to tow your machine wherever you go, then off load & hook the trailer behind the 'wheeler/utv. The Harbor Freight one's are nice, but if you're handy I prefer a modified single Wave Runner trailer...they can be had for <>$100. The longer tongue makes it a lot easier to back up/maneuver but can be a hindrance in thick woods.

How many kids and what age / size? Put a drop basket rack on the back of a Foreman, one with side rails. If you are putting around slow one kid can sit on each side of you holding on to the rail. Small children you can do one if front of you if you strap them to your belly with a large neoprene Velcro weight lifting/ kidney belt.

Interesting.. Never thought of the idea of getting a road worthy trailer that a ATV could pull. That sounds like a great idea. I always thought an ATV trailer would be small but I guess it will pull quite a bit.

Matching the hub/bearing dimensions would be the main challenge for the one I bought 8 or 9 years ago; few local parts houses carry them.
