Everlast PA 200 ST arrived

I found I can strike the arc easier and run a bead at lower amps with this one. Is that because of the DC current or the Auto Hot Start is unit has?
A DC welder will take less amps to run a rod than an AC welder.
The hot start is just enough to help in starting rods, but not to much for tacking.
Take a note pad and start writing down your settings for each size, and type of rod. For flat, vertical up, and overhead. I personally run overhead, horizontal, and flat about the same amount of amps.

Glad to hear you're satisfied with your new welder! For the price, I can't believe the quality of arc these machines have. People take one look at them, and pre judge them, and want nothing to do with them.:confused3:

I was worried about the lead length. I just got in a Longevity Stickweld 140. Leads are almost 14' long. This being a dc welder, the stinger goes to neg. correct?

Stinger to Positive + work clamp to Negative . This is also known by some as "straight Polarity" which tells you nothing. Better named DCEP.. which describes how it should be hooked up.. some rods can be run the other way also. DCEN. If and when you get a TIG torch, you want the TIG torched up to the Negative port, and the Work clamp hooked up to the Positive +.

Who ever came up with the terms "straight polarity" and "reverse polarity" was an idiot. It assumes you already know everything, and does nothing to help make connections. rant off.!

If for some reason you want less penetration for like sheet metal welding use DCEN, put the stinger in the negative post. A lot of people run 6013 on DCEN. For open root welding with 7018 I use DCEN.

Carl,
If you want to try something "different" try the PA 200 with the polarity reversed with 6010 or 6011 for open root. I found it very surprising. Arc may not have been quite as stable, but flux came off more readily and bead profile was a bit different.

Stinger on positive(+) is reverse polarity not straight. As far as welders go and most DC current, the flow is negative to positive. That's the stinger on the - is straight polarity and the stinger on the plus is reverse polarity. I was taught to remember that DCRP=EP. DCRP is used the most for stick welding but some rods like 7024 actually burn a little nicer on DCSP even though they will burn on any polarity.

Apparently in Europe DCSP is used with 6010 on thin wall pipe for the root pass. Lincoln's pipe welding pamphlet talks about it.

Really? Never heard of such. I'll give it a try when I go out to the shop in awhile.
I think I'm about to switch teams, no not that way! I was given some Lincoln 5P+ 6010, I think I like it better than the ESAB 10P 6010. Just a slight bit more stable at lower amps, and the slag comes off so easy. I know Mark in the past you've said you really like 5P+, I had some a long time ago, it wasn't very impressive! I thought it was old, and dry so I dipped it in water, it still didn't run very well, but this new stuff is very impressive.:cool2:
