What do you call getting unstuck using the FEL?

A good day!

I call it "pushing out" but it is just a common sense maneuver. But it does not always work. When the mud under your front wheels and loader is like very thin chocolate pudding, and you get an old refrigerator door and some old boards and concrete blocks to put under the bucket to push on, and you push all of that to China, and it all disappears, That is when you do the "walk of shame" and go get help from the neighbor. But it does work a lot of the time, and can get you out of a situation that all of the 4WD and differential lock that you apply is just not going to get you unstuck.

When you cant WALK YOURSELF OUT of a situation with FEL or backhoe where you have no traction then you are STUCK. Otherwise you are just temporarily incapacitated or in an immovable state temporarily.

This is similarly to not knowing where you are but aren't lost that is till you run out of gas and still don't know where you are, then you are lost.

Got my tractor high centered on hardpack snow today, and used the FEL to move it backwards several feet to free it, a technique I have never used before. Darned if I know a term to describe doing this...anybody care to enlighten me? Thanks.

Lift, push up, and out. There's your opening JD.

You're not stuck... stuck is when outside help is required and/or you have to get out/off the vehicle more than once. *grin*

The technical term is Hyrdaulicalunstuckitivness.

So far you are the winner. That is until some of those guys hanging out around the "Pallets in the Field" see this and break out their dictionary.

Is this the voice of experience we hear??? :drink:

Smart. Inexpensive when it works.
That would be the key part. :(

Several years ago when we had real snow in the NC mountains I found I hadn't pushed the snow far enough off the driveway when the third or fourth storm came, so I set the rear blade to the side to nudge it a bit further off. I wasn't paying enough attention when the blade caught a hard spot and spun the tractor into the ditch, which at that point was about 3 ft. deep and filled with snow and the tractor went into it nose-first.

No problem, I thought, a good time for the ole' walking it out with the FEL trick. Put the bucket now, un-curled it, and was backed out 8 inches or so. Good start. Lifted up the bucket for the next time and the tractor slid right back were it had been. Seems the tires had no bite on the ice at the edge of the road and couldn't hold it long enough to move the bucket.

Luckily I had some heavy blocks which I hauled out (getting my truck stuck in a snowbank as I backed down to the spot, but that's another story). Lifted the tractor with the FEL and set blocks under the front wheels, repeated until it was level, and it came out easily!

Self extraction?

Never had a name for it.

I once watched a case 580 Backhoe literally wade into a marsh, floorboards awash, using his bucket and hoe to walk in.
He was installing a hydro pole so he would drag the pole, crawl walk the hoe and repeat `til he got to where he wanted to be.
He also dragged a 2 yard sled of crushed stone to bed the pole.
Once pole was installed he crawled walked back bringing the empty sled as well as the damaged pole.

The whole thing was simply awesome to watch. He walked that hoe about 150 yards over partially buried 3 and 4 ft boulders. Quite a show.
