When I remember to plug it in for 4 hours in -30F weather it starts good.
Last month we had some single digit temps. I tried starting the backhoe up and it just did not want to start, I figured I'd kill the battery trying, it was turning over very slow and giving all it had to just chug along. I plugged in the block heater and left it. The next day I came out, still single digit temps, and climbed up into the cab, turned the key, pressed the starter button, and instantly it fired right up. I don't even think it made a full revolution it started so fast!
My tractor doesn't like starting in the cold either, and I have no block heater on it. So there is only two choices, struggle with starting it in the cold, or install a block heater. I emailed Messick's Parts Department and within hours had a reply of exactly what I needed.
I just placed my order for my block heater.![]()
Yes the glow plugs work perfectly. I plugged it in for 1.5 hours and it started easily. I just don't understand why this tractor starts so hard in cold weather compared to my others. Fred
I leave my tractor plugged in all of the time. A count of 20 on the glow plugs- it fires right up and smooths out - below 0, above 0. I keep it under cover in a shelter logic tarp building, so I don't have to brush the snow off before I use it every time. 2-3x a week I'm using it, for snow, getting wood, dumping manure from the barn. I've got the original battery- 10 years old.
Have you ever tried starting it without the glow plugs when it's plugged in? If it's like my m8540 your just consuming the life of the glow plugs unnecessarily. If my tractor has been plugged in For more than a couple hours even at -10°F I have no way of even cycling the glow plugs because the coolant is to warm and the controller won't cycle and It fires right up. My buddies 1982 jd starts right up without any kind of preheating. If he uses the block heater as well
Some engines just start better with glow plugs, older VW diesels diesels wanted no part of starting without them, even in summer. My L3400 is fine without them above 50F, below that it complains a bit.Without the glow plugs, it has to crank a bit more- harder on the battery which is old. If I'm running it and turn it off then start again and its warm- it starts right off without glow plugs. But if it sits 20 min, I use the glow plugs. Even in the summer, 80 out, it does best with the first start of the day using the glow plugs. I count 20, but that's how long it takes for the light to blink telling me its ready.
