What does your tractor start like in cold weather?

What I like starting when it is plugged in, is that the engine is warmed up and the oil is warmer as well- and gets around faster than it would when it is below 20. You can hear it in the start up. That's why I don't like a cold engine to crank over before it starts. Better to have it warm to start with.

Sometimes a block heater isn't feasible. Are you going to plug in while you're at work? I could plug in while at home but would take quite a bit to set it up for my truck. Are you saying it's harder on a Diesel engine to crank in -10 than it is on a gas engine?

Use the Block heater at home during cooler night time temps.
For at work in the daytime. There is no real winter weather in North Carolina. The coldest city of Asheville has normal high and lows of a very moderate 46F to 26F.

Don't assume. Not in North Carolina right now or last winter. Yes I have a place in NC. But not my only residence. If I was talking about NC temps yes it would be a non issue.

20,F or colder is my plug in number, my L3400 starts easy at 0-10 degrees F. when I plug the block heater in for just 1 hr., IF I was in a hurry.

On a Saturday morning I get up at the crack of 8:30, put my slippers on, look at the temp. 8,F, get the stove roaring, plug the tractor in, (not far from house) if it's 0 or colder I run back inside, make coffee, have some Grape Nuts, drink coffee, check TractorByNet, 6 cups later it's now11:30, where the time go?, check temp, 15,F, Oh boy heat wave, start tractor with 10 count on glow plugs, starts like July, get my chainsaw and put in an exhausting 4 hr. day!

I guess the moral of the story is, I don't like starting a cold engine with Rottela 15W40 motor oil in it, seams to me that creates a lot of engine ware, and I was told once that the first min. is the hardest on a motor.

I mirror your schedule down to the minute. The Kubota has always had Mobile One in it. Shell Rotella is in the F-350. It likes being plugged in. Love splitting the wood when it is cold.

You answered your own question. You got on TBN, it's addictive.

I do it at night so that I cut myself off when I fall asleep.

Down to 10-15F at least: I crank my tractor for 2-3 seconds, press my glow-plug button for 3 seconds (I by passed my dead controller with a big button), then turn the key again - starts instantly like it's 70 degrees. Without the glow plugs, it cranks 15-20 seconds before catching.

I don't know what it does when it's colder than 10-15F. I refuse to go outside in those temps :)

45 degrees this past weekend, no need for block heater, tractor starts real easy, but still plenty of snow to keep the wood clean, and why are my tire chains all over the place, wont stay on straight.
