to be fair i believe you have glossed over some important issues..

for instance. the last line shows the asterisk items as a 'trivial source of fat'...

...I'd call that a safe' trivial' and not a lie.

Pam oil spray, which is 100% fat, is listed as Fat-Free on the front label, so yes I am always suspicious of fat free front labels because they lie.

is it caloric fat or not? if you can't break it down.. it passes.

kind of like fats for making soap. not all fats are saponafiable.

I don't use pam.. so can't say on pam. etc.

I thought of this thread when I read about the labeling issues associated with "Just Mayo," a new "mayonnaise" product that doesn't include eggs.

Just Mayo flirts with violating the federal government's standard of identity for mayonnaise. A standard of identity is the federal government's official definition of a food. Sometimes, having a standard of identity protects consumers, by forbidding the sale of foods that are adulterated with fillers. At other times, a standard of identity may become outdated, preventing healthful or environmentally sound innovations. For example, there have been major controversies over whether the word "milk" can be used in the label for "soy milk."

The presence of eggs in mayonnaise is almost an archetypal example of a standard of identity. The Congressional Research Service glossary of agriculture policy terms specifically mentions mayonnaise under the heading for "standards of identity." According to the standards of identify in the Code of Federal Regulations, which are accessible on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website, "mayonnaise" includes eggs.

The label for Just Mayo uses the slang "mayo" rather than "mayonnaise" in the product name. A favorable review on a vegan website calls the product "vegan mayonnaise," while a Whole Foods press release goes instead with "vegan mayonnaise-style product." The American Egg Board, a semi-public federal government checkoff entity, has begun a campaign to address the labeling of egg substitutes. It has a related white paper appealing for a "clean label" to oppose some of the egg labeling alternatives that may implicitly or explicitly be critical of traditional industrial egg production.

There may be some legal fireworks before the labeling of vegan alternatives to mayonnaise is settled.

i see the kraft fat free mayo label lists a 'trivial' amount of egg yolks .. I believe it is in the under 2% area. shows 0 chol / 0 fat cals per 16g serving.

I think the artificial stuff is much less healthy than real fat, etc. The body can process what occurs naturally, but walls off the fake stuff. That can serve as a nidus for other things.

Pizza can vary a lot. If you make your own with whole-grain crust, use no-salt tomato sauce as a sauce base, don't load it up with fatty meats, etc., it can be healthy in moderation. Unfortunately, that not a description of real-world pizza consumption.

Plus....if you drink enough beer with that type of pizza.....you won't miss the taste!

a nive super vegi pizze similar to what dave listed CAN taste good.. remember.. taste is subjective. vegi's baked with tomato sauce sounds goot to me. a lil whole grain flatbread to help hold it together keeps the hands clean. :)

when i drank beer, pizza or pretzens or mex food was about the only time I would drink it. If it was mex food.. then either something dark, or whatever exotic bottled brew the place had.. if pizza.. then i liked one of the 'light' beers. ( not so much fo rthe calorie issue.. but many of the light beers also had a lighter flavor ). The exception to that was killians red... that went well with -most- things.. and if it didn't work.. a pinot grigio usually did!

Is there anything Pinot Grigio *doesn't* go good with? If so, I haven't found it yet! :licking:
