That's what it has been referred to here in WNC. We are expecting 8-14" before it is finished tomorrow afternoon. That will put it up in the top five of snow storms here. First figured it would be nothing much at all but then the storm which had been in Texas really did move this way to start dropping the white stuff by noon today. We're prepared but that includes being ready for no power for days. I think our county might have a half dozen road trucks capable of "scraping" snow but the bigger plows will be reserved for the interstates. A couple weeks ago we had less than one inch and everyone went berserk, this week ought to be a whole lot more fun. Stay tuned for pics if you are interested.

If anything helps towards summer water supply.

We have 1/2 inch of sleet so far...coming down pretty good but as long as it stays sleet not so bad....the freezing rain they are predicting is what they are calling Catastrophic...since they are predicting up to a 1 inch layer of freezing rain and they said a 12 inch square and 1 inch thick sheet of ice weighs 6 lbs just as an example of how heavy a 1 inch covering of Ice will be on power lines and trees....I sure hope we just get sleet and snow...but we are in the warning area for the 1 inch....sigh.....

I could not imagine one inch of ice, that will be catastrophic for not only power lines but even structures. Be Careful!

Ice is the worst. We had an ice storm just a couple of days before Christmas. Lost power for about 2 1/2 days. Always good to stock up the pantry, get generator fuel and make sure it will start before you actually need it. I did all this, yet could not find the whip I made last year for the generator. Still can't find it 6 weeks later. That was a $50 mistake because I had to buy the stuff to make another.
On a semi related note, I've had all I can take of the Weather Channel and their stupid "named" storms and preempting all regularly scheduled programs so that they can basically run Weather Center 24/7 and make bigger deals out of a lot of things than they really are.

You can fix that by subscribing to Direct TV. They dropped the Weather Channel. Yes, the HYPE and HOOPLA about weather is old and tiresome, but they sure beat the pants off "Weather Nation" IMHO.

Believe me, I've looked into cutting cable. But I have to have it for high speed internet and the Magic Jack for my business phone. By the time I add cable internet price to satellite's pricing after their promo expires, I'm at the same monthly expenditure or more.

Expecting 9-15" of snow starting Thursday, with winds gusting up to 40 mph. Nothing worse than ice storms hopefully it's all snow this time.
Hope you all down south can get through this without to much trouble!
It's been so unusually steady cold up here that when the occasional 34 deg. F. day comes along, people comment on how nice the day was.
Come on Spring and Turkey hunting!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, keep us updated. I bet a lot of folks there are "flippin out" with that much snow so far south.
If you put a big snow storm in the proper thinking, it's a good time to just stay (safe at) home, to help & meet your neighbors while shoveling out, and enjoy the beauty. Natures way of slowing things down. The mall will still be there next week. Anyone without 2-3 days of food on hand after the weatherman's warning's deserves to be a little hungry for a day or 2. Now this all changes with ice & loss of electricity or property damage. Be safe. Remember your boss/job is also snowed in, what better excuse is there to stay home for a day or so?

We ended up with about 11" here (west of Brevard). It is still snowing now, but should be finishing up in the next couple hours. Luckily it was all snow here in WNC. I work in Hendersonville as a System technician (line tech) for a cable company, and if we had gotten any ice with this storm, we'd be in rough shape.

I believe NOAA even told them to cut it out with all the storm naming nonsense. I think it is hilarious that they name a 3" storm in NY and people freak out like it never snows here.

Can't stand weather channel. Here in NJ, only guy to watch is Jonathan Carr @ Severe NJ Weather. He has been 100% accurate so far this winter and his predictions are usually 4-5 days before talking heads on tv. He uses lots of different models, including WeatherBell. Local tv calling for 6-10, he called for 18". We are already at 14" and still have a day to go.

I read yesterday that lake Superior is 90% frozen and is expected to freeze over completely before all of this is over. That hasn't happened in awhile - just further evidence of global warming,,,

As of right now we have well over 20" of snow, might be closer to 24", and drifting badly. The VDOT motor grader was having a tough time with a big V-plow making it through our road. I took some pics that I'll post later, the snow was completely over the front tires on my B3200, pushing it with the grille almost.

Good clean fun! That 1845 Case with chains all around will do a number on the snow!

We were ripped off in our area. I'd be generous to say there are 5 inches on the ground. 8-12" PHOOEY! Should have known better, they can't forecast rain any better than that either. Still can't believe they missed by that much though. :sigh: IMG_9936 - Copy.JPGIMG_9963 - Copy.JPGIMG_9999.JPG

We ended up w/ 21" and the forecast is for another 3-5 tonight! Plenty of seat time from 2:30am on. Burned through a full tank already and haven't helped neighbors yet. Totally reminds me of when I was a kid growing up in CT during 60s-70s. We use to get hammered all the time...all I did when I was a kid was be outside whether sledding/toboggan/skating/skiing. The only time I came in was to eat or change clothes/warm up.

A bit of tough sledding down your way, for sure !

I hope everybody stays safe through this, and uses common sense.... I'm guessing that few people are set up properly to drive through heavy snow conditions in your neck of the woods.
