In terms of personal knowledge, biology is my weakest science.

But, I know enough to understand that hormone disruption is a big issue.

I have friends that cycle up and down 40+ pounds and are always dieting. I don't think this is good for the body.

.

It's not.

People think that dieting gets them healthy but then they gain it back. Oh well, at least I was skinny for awhile. Better then nothing right?

Wrong! It's the gaining of weight that is worse for your heart than actually just staying at the heavier weight in the first place.

Yup thats why it's hard. The calories have to come from "somewhere".
Habits must change. People who can pull it off are strong people. If they can pull that off they should consider other important projects like start a business. Because they have shown the ability to accomplish something very difficult!

A little off topic but what the heck.

I was recently in the U.K. and France for two weeks
visiting my daughter. We traveled on the underground,
tubes, trains, took the Eurostar to Paris, etc so I was constantly
exposed to the locals.

I discovered the most amazing thing; there are no fat people
in France or the U.K. Ok, I saw about 10 and was able to determine
half of them were from the U.S.

So, what's going on in the U.S. to cause all this obesity?
I'm blaming it on processed foods until I get a better answer.

It's the processed food that is cheap to buy and the drive every where culture of the USA. A lot of food in the US is extremely unhealthy and should be banned.

Of course there's no singular answer to the obesity question but some of it, I believe, comes from the suburban lifestyle. A good chunk of America now lives such that it is necessary to drive everywhere. People don't walk to the store. Kids don't walk to school. Don't walk to work. For some people, the only exercize they get is the walk to their car (in the attached garage) and the walk from their car to their desk after they fought for the closest parking space. With drive-though fast food, they don't even have to get out of their car to eat!

I lived in Germany 2005 to 2008 and traveled extensively throughout Europe. They are generally much healthier. Portions are much smaller and meals are more wholesome--- fresh ingredients are common, and meals are usually lean meat/ potatoes/vegetables. Soda is not served in large containers, and their pastries are not made with cane sugar, they use beet sugar. Plus, their culture is much more aware of the obesity epidemic and they consciously avoid it. They are very nice people and tend to be more disciplined than we Americans, and yes, I love the USA.

My kitchen in Germany was small, typical of most homes in Europe ( little counter space and most just have an apartment size refrigerator with small freezer. Consequently, I stopped at the market every 2 to 3 days (or more often because I would practice the language).

MY father had a good system to maintain his healthy weight. If his pants started to feel a little snug, he would lose a pound or two until they fit right again. Kinda like nip it in the bud and watch intake.

Guess that was a little long winded, but I think it is accurate.

I have a friend, who, whenever I say one word about how things are done elsewhere, he says "why do you hate America so much?" And everybody has a great laugh. All fun & games,,,,, but that's generally what people seem to think, and it won't end well. As an old fella it'll be too late when the wisdom we've passed to the next generation is to "keep your blinders on."

Fully agree... Admitting there's a huge problem (pun intended) is the first step to solving the problem.... But many refuse to believe there's an issue. Humans are not supposed to be 300 to 500 pounds! It's truly an epidemic.

You must have been going about with your eyes closed in the UK. We have almost as high a percentage of obese people as the US. Even in France I'm starting to see obesity. France is now the biggest market for McDonalds outside the US. Don't blame it on the fast food. Blame it on overeating. If that man who made the anti-McDonalds film had eaten as much food in Michelin starred restaurants as he did in McDonalds, he would have ended up in hospital.
