It begins early in this country. When I was a school Facility Manager before retiring, I would get on school campuses every day. A high percentage of elementary kids were significantly overweight, but what was really strange was the high school kids. Many were skinny as a rail but had a pot belly and poor posture. Can't figure that one out.

Surely processed foods are not the healthiest. The amount of salt in processed foods is amazing. How much salt is good/bad for you is debated and I suspect we can eat more salt than some studies would suggest but there is just too much salt in food.

I have started drinking veggie drinks like V8. Even the low salt V8 is heavy in salt at around 140 MG per 8 oz. Organic veggie juice had about 40 MG AND TASTED BETTER! More expensive though.

While I don't think processed foods are the best foods I don't think they are causing fat people. Portion sizes are causing fat people. Going to McD's in the past, one would get a couple of hamburgers, a bag of fries, and a small drink by today's standards. Now, you get a Big Mac that is loaded with calories. Heck maybe two Big Macs, a supersized fry that has maybe 4 times the food as the small bag, and the drink is HUGE compared to what we used to get. It is just too danged much food/calories and it is cheap. One can get all, or most, of their daily calories at a fast food place but they still eat three meals a day. Too much food. Too much calories.

I have been wearing a heart rate monitor when working on our place. Splitting firewood burns 300-500+ calories an hour. 300 if I am not splitting all of the time. 500 if I can splitting and stacking all of the time. 500 calories would be 2,000 calories in four hours. If I maintained the calorie burn for eight hours that is 4,000 calories just to get the work down and I would guess I would need at least another 2,000-3,000 just to stay alive. The problem is that people are eating like they are splitting wood for 8 hours when all they did is sit.

Like many, I gained weight in my 20's and I have been fighting the fat off ever since. A few years ago, I stopped eating as much. I just ate less and I lost 10-13 pounds as a result. I bought a new belt when I started and I was using the buckle hole that made the belt the widest. The belt has five holes and I need to make a sixth because I have lost that much fat. I did it by simply eating less.

I went to the gym last night and burned around 1,300 calories, For dinner I had some veggies juice, carrot juice, and the wifey cooked a small cheese pizza that three of us ate. I had thee little slices that were about the size of one regular slice of pizza. I splurged and had a beer too.:laughing::laughing: I did not go to sleep hungry. In the past, I would have eating most of the pizza...

We just eat too much.

My area of NC has a large number of people from South of the Border and I don't mean South Carolina. Some of these people are thin but many are really, really fat. Southern food might be fat/calorie heavy but refried beans have lard in them if they are made right. And I love me some good refried beans! :licking::licking::licking::laughing::laughing::laughing: All about portions...

Later,
Dan

There's a lot of "food" for thought in those charts. Since some have claimed that southern foods and eating habits have a large part in the weight problem, wonder why TN, GA and FL aren't quite as heavy? I could maybe understand FL simply because so many northerners retire down there, but TN? Maybe IL and MI would be because of all the southerners that flocked up there to work in the automotive industry?

Having a military background, I do know that weight is getting to be a problem. Years and years ago, the military was turning down a lot of potential enlistments because they didn't weight enough (my dad bulked up on bananas just to meet the minimum requirement), now a large percentage of possible enlistees are turned down because they weight too much.

I am just guessing, but a whole lot of folks here have roots in the south. When I was growing up it was kinda like Florida - you hardly ever met a native born Michigander. One suburb of Detroit was Taylor, Michigan. It was called "Taylortucky", even on local radio and tv.

"Plenty of people on here grow their own food, even if they don't sell any of it."

I won't, either! It's so darn good even my kids hate store-bought & restaurant food now.

Side Note: ordered garden seeds for 2014 (gotta get thru this brutal winter)

If you walk around europe you don't see people carrying food or drink. At the airport nobody is snacking except americans. I opened a crackly plastic bag at the airport to snack, and everybody looked at me. Yet at the restaurants, the food portions were huge and the europeans all finished their plates, but I couldn't. And they finished FAST too. It's puzzling why there is such a weight difference. The truckers in Europe look healthy.

In Seattle people think they have to carry a beverage. And often it's some 350 calories fatbomb.
…….must…….carry……beverage…..at…..all….times……..

I suspect the European food supply has less trash in their processed foods. In the US we allow (and in many cases defend!) industry putting stuff in our food, for industry benefit not ours. Heaven help us if we ever have to use our standing army…..

We had some visitors from Europe and they were amazed at two things about how we eat.
1. We eat very frequently. They were amazed how often people snacked on junk.
2. We eat more processed food and less whole fresh foods.
It really was interesting because the first day we went to a country fair and they said "look at all the fat people, and they're always eating".

A little off topic but what the heck.

I was recently in the U.K. and France for two weeks
visiting my daughter. We traveled on the underground,
tubes, trains, took the Eurostar to Paris, etc so I was constantly
exposed to the locals.

I discovered the most amazing thing; there are no fat people
in France or the U.K. Ok, I saw about 10 and was able to determine
half of them were from the U.S.

So, what's going on in the U.S. to cause all this obesity?
I'm blaming it on processed foods until I get a better answer.

Consider also that most European countries don't allow GMO and growth hormones into their food supply. The food supply has been radicalized in the U.S. over the past several decades. (Not a big story in the main stream media, hmmm, anybody guess why?) We also have a system where farmers can grow corn for less than cost of production, financied by taxpayers, a corporate welfare system as lobbied for (bought by) the food manufacturers who want to put all that subsidized high fructose corn syrup in every product knowing us stupid peons can't resist.
But I think the growth hormones have a lot to do with it. My wife, whose a teacher, seeing "girls becoming women" (to put it politely) at much much earlier ages (4th, 5th grade) than 20, 30 years ago. (This is particularly true amoung those from poorer backgrounds who eat more processed foods.
Girls' Ages At First Period Getting Younger, Particularly Those From Poorer Backgrounds - Medical News Today

Everybody should see the movie "Food Inc." (available on Netflix) that deals with the radical changes the corporations have made to our food supply.

In terms of personal knowledge, biology is my weakest science.

But, I know enough to understand that hormone disruption is a big issue.

I have friends that cycle up and down 40+ pounds and are always dieting. I don't think this is good for the body.

.

It's not.

People think that dieting gets them healthy but then they gain it back. Oh well, at least I was skinny for awhile. Better then nothing right?

Wrong! It's the gaining of weight that is worse for your heart than actually just staying at the heavier weight in the first place.

Yup thats why it's hard. The calories have to come from "somewhere".
Habits must change. People who can pull it off are strong people. If they can pull that off they should consider other important projects like start a business. Because they have shown the ability to accomplish something very difficult!

It's the processed food that is cheap to buy and the drive every where culture of the USA. A lot of food in the US is extremely unhealthy and should be banned.

Of course there's no singular answer to the obesity question but some of it, I believe, comes from the suburban lifestyle. A good chunk of America now lives such that it is necessary to drive everywhere. People don't walk to the store. Kids don't walk to school. Don't walk to work. For some people, the only exercize they get is the walk to their car (in the attached garage) and the walk from their car to their desk after they fought for the closest parking space. With drive-though fast food, they don't even have to get out of their car to eat!

I lived in Germany 2005 to 2008 and traveled extensively throughout Europe. They are generally much healthier. Portions are much smaller and meals are more wholesome--- fresh ingredients are common, and meals are usually lean meat/ potatoes/vegetables. Soda is not served in large containers, and their pastries are not made with cane sugar, they use beet sugar. Plus, their culture is much more aware of the obesity epidemic and they consciously avoid it. They are very nice people and tend to be more disciplined than we Americans, and yes, I love the USA.

My kitchen in Germany was small, typical of most homes in Europe ( little counter space and most just have an apartment size refrigerator with small freezer. Consequently, I stopped at the market every 2 to 3 days (or more often because I would practice the language).

MY father had a good system to maintain his healthy weight. If his pants started to feel a little snug, he would lose a pound or two until they fit right again. Kinda like nip it in the bud and watch intake.

Guess that was a little long winded, but I think it is accurate.

I have a friend, who, whenever I say one word about how things are done elsewhere, he says "why do you hate America so much?" And everybody has a great laugh. All fun & games,,,,, but that's generally what people seem to think, and it won't end well. As an old fella it'll be too late when the wisdom we've passed to the next generation is to "keep your blinders on."

Fully agree... Admitting there's a huge problem (pun intended) is the first step to solving the problem.... But many refuse to believe there's an issue. Humans are not supposed to be 300 to 500 pounds! It's truly an epidemic.

You must have been going about with your eyes closed in the UK. We have almost as high a percentage of obese people as the US. Even in France I'm starting to see obesity. France is now the biggest market for McDonalds outside the US. Don't blame it on the fast food. Blame it on overeating. If that man who made the anti-McDonalds film had eaten as much food in Michelin starred restaurants as he did in McDonalds, he would have ended up in hospital.
