It would be one hel* of a job to clean every path of the fluid through all the hyd motors, radiator and tank and hoses.

You can flush several times, but some of those particles may just sit in the hose and release over time.

I have heard stories of complete tear down of pumps, motors, and scrub out all lines, and tanks, etc.

It could be done to some degree by say an owner with the time and tools to clean out hoses, and be able to replace all fluid, or filter and reuse the fluid.

Tearing down pumps and motors should be left to the pros, or just take your chances and flush as best you can.

Like someone said, the only filter is the suction filter for the charge pump, and I believe that is a 10 micron filter.

What that means is that the pump and hyd motors are using old oil when everything is working correctly, and some make up oil, but when things start to deteriorate, the pump just recirculates any/all the particles through all the hyd motors and back through the pump.

Any charge fluid not used to replenish the pump is sent through the pump case to flush out the hot oil and then sent to the radiator and then the tank.

You might be able to flush each hyd line and then each motor, but you have to keep the pump inlet flooded.

You can add some return filters to the steering/lift, and PTO circuits if you want to protect them.

Well I finally got the last two hoses off and the pump removed. Had to take off the pto pump to get to the last hose.......also can't take the tram pump off without removing the engine mount pump adapter.....it's a bit like a chinese puzzle. One thing I noticed is that a couple of teeth on the coupler spider had sheared off but since it's just a plastic part I'm inclined to think that's more a result of the problem then the problem itself.

If what I'm seeing is correct the only hose that connects to the filter is attached to the tram pump......so the only oil being filtered is what goes to the tram pump and then the wheel motors......everything else on the machine including the steering/pto pump and all cylinders is using unfiltered oil.......but I'm a real amateur on hydraulics so I stand by ready to be corrected :)

Did you read post #21?

The pump and wheel motors are in a closed loop hyd system.

I would never reuse hydraulic fluid. This fluid collects moisture, metal shavings and debris. I use my Mahindra 4530 with rear remotes for hay operations, brush hogging, snow plowing and logging. I also own Kubota B2910 and John Deere 5075 tractors. I change hydraulic fluid/filter every 200 hours and engine oil/filter every 6 months or 100 hours. Never haf a hydraulic problem.

Power Trac owners change their hydraulic filters every 50 hours of operation. Changing hydraulic oil in a Power Trac is quite another matter, as there are 10 gallons+ of hydraulic fluid in the smallest Power Trac.

You got it. When you step on the pedal, the swash plate in the tram pump directs oil in the wheel motor circuit one way. When you step on the pedal in the other direction, the swash pump changes angles and directs it the other way. All of the oil in the wheel motor circuit just goes around in a big loop. However, anything that goes past the swash plate goes to the hydraulic cooler and then back to the tank. To make up that lost oil, the tram pump sucks oil from the tank and through the filter. Or something close to that explanation! Anyhow, if the tram pump blows chunks of metal, it can go though any or all of the wheel motors, the cooler and then into the tank. Hopefully it settles out in the tank bottom before being picked up by the 2 PTO pumps. One PTO pump is dedicated to the main PTO only. The other smaller AUX PTO pump provides pressure to the steering, lift and curl/dump circuits, as well as the quick attach (which is also called the AUX PTO). ;)

This is the spaghetti of hoses that is left over after pump removal.

I read it JJ....wasn't sure I understood it....thats why I wrote what I saw to make sure. Thanks for your advice on flushing......that makes sense in that it would be near impossible to clean all the lines, pumps, cylinders, manifolds and what nots out without literally doing a complete tear down....which I'm not up to.

got a call from Terry this morning.........they opened the pump and found that the bolts holding the piston that regulates the flow for forward and reverse had come off.......rest of the pump was fine.....so a relatively cheap fix and it's on its way back. I did ask him if he thought I should replace the hydraulic fluid and he said it wasn't necessary. Can't wait for the fun of putting it all back together again.....haha

Well that's good to hear. Supposed to be very cold the next week. But not supposed to snow much here.

You will have spent more time taking it off and putting it back on than what it took them to fix it.:(

Oh that goes without saying....haha........it's the difference between them knowing what they are doing.......and me not knowing what I'm doing
I'm hoping it goes back together faster since I have learned a few things from taking it off....but I doubt it!

That's good to hear. I need to get back in business as I have a lot of bucket work to do......widen the drive way and clear a path to the propane tank so I can get a delivery.......the barns tank is running on fumes. Plus I really should dig out the mailbox.......but I'm going to be gun shy as every time the pt has broken it's been down there........just some bad mojo hanging around the end of the driveway....wonder if I need to have an exorcism performed down there

Stand by the mailbox, rest your arm on it, drink a beer and have a long talk with the mailbox. It will understand and you'll be all set. ;)

Got the pump back from power trac yesterday and spent last night and today getting it back on and all the hoses connected. I connected 2 of the hoses on the bottom first before I attached the pump to the motor mount....those were the ones that's impossible to get a wrench to. The only hose that gave me a real tough time was the line connected to the filter......there is just no play in that one. Topped up the hydraulic tank.......took about 5 quarts.......and bled the air out.....had one loose nut that needed tightening........and then I crossed my fingers and started it up.........and everything works! I'll give it a good workout tomorrow digging frozen snow banks and monday there calling for up to 15" of snow here so hopefully all goes well.

For any one on the fence about getting a pt and worried about not having dealer service available like the color trac's........this was a perfect example of that not needing to be an issue to prevent you from buying. If I can fix it then anyone can :) .......between having the help on this board and Terry on the phone theres no need for dealer service.........Jack
