Field fencing vs. utility fencing for garden?

I'd go 7', then put the one wire at 8'. If your worried about the deer seeing it, put the wire through some 1/2" pvc pipe, that should make that fence "pop" when a deer considers the height. 20' 1/2" PVC is cheap.

I've seen 72" and 96" fencing on the internet, but not 84"....I'll look around some more.

If you have to, put 2 wires on top 1' apart. a tall fence IMO is going to look like a "tall fence". I'd use what you can find locally and think you can personally live with.. I'd put the $$ in the corner braces and one extra "H" brace where ever your putting a gate.

Have you thought about "goat" fencing holes are 2" x 4" and while it is more expensive then field fence, it will conform to terrain like field fence. In my are it is around 300.00 for 330 ft. for 48" high. I would even consider "goat" fencing on the lower portion and field fencing on the upper.

For the past three years we have used the same fencing in a heavy deer population area.
1. Cut and placed 3' lengths of 3" PVC pipe where we wanted posts. Placed Metal posts at corners only to assist.
2. I cut 14' sapplings and placed one in each pipe.
3. We put three foot lengths of "rabbit wire" around the base of the fencing with 3"-4" under ground.
4. We put loosely fitting 14 foot nylon deer fence around the entire area and used plastic ties to hold everything.
5. My wife planted Marigolds inside around the interior next to the fence.

We have internal fenced area with deer fence over the top to keep out birds. This is only where we have the figs, strawberry, blackberry and blue berry. All of this works great.

Several fellas here use the Nylon deer fence and say they love it. I personally like the longevity of my steel fence. Maybe Ron from Ohio, or Jinman will chime in as they both use the "deer fence". I have considered using the nylon fence for one end, easy to remove to till with the tractor.

I read somewhere on the internet if you choose hi tensile woven field fence you have to use round wooden posts only. Has anyone else heard that and if that is true, why? I was considering 96" hi tensile field fencing, but if I have to use only round wooden posts, I may decide on ordinary galvanized woven field fencing that is not hi tensile and use a combination of wooden treated square posts and metal t posts. Thanks for your help. I think I am close to closing the deal on my selection. I plan on using dry bag ready cement for the wooden posts.

I have only heard that for fences that will be electrified. I know it is easier to nail wire to wood post, but I use steel oilfield pipe on my fences. I dont/haven't paid the extra for high tensile field fence though, but I see it all over Texas and many have the same oilfield pipe at least for corners and line bracing.

I have used stranded High Tensile, but as a hot wire for cattle and used the same metal post with porcelain or plastic standoffs.

I've built miles of high tensile 8' fence and use 2 3/8" and 2 7/8" oil field pipe for corners and braces. Some of the straight line pulls were well over 1000' and the pipe seems to work just fine. Currently I've been using the 2 3/8" oilfield pipe for line posts as well because I can get it cheaper than I can t-posts. It does not look as pretty as the green t-posts but it works for my situation.

Common all over Texas and Oklahoma. If you are in oil and gas country, cal around looking for "drill stem". Most common sizes are 2-3/8" and 2-7/8"
