soo today I worked on the tracktor, took the belt off to see if the knock went away, it didn't.. but I was totally sure it came from the top and somewhere from the front..

so I took the cylinder head off.. and found something I kindoff suspected but couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it... im not going to tell you guys, I made some pictures that im going to post later :)

anyway a rebuild of the engine is not going to happen... after I clean up the gasket I will see if I can reuse it, but the engine inside looks very good...

Soundguy nailed the "9", for sure. Sorry I left that one out. He has always been way more up on old Ford stats than myself. We do differ however, in my preference for the old flatheads like yours, while he prefers the later, overhead valve models. I think Ford stumbled a bit, with their first few attempts, at the OHV engine, and that allowed others , like IH, and JD, to leave them in the dust as far as tractor sales numbers go. Just about as long as Ford tractor's packed the flatheads (up to the 1952, 8n), they held a commanding lead, over the competition.

As far as your sounds, one time I found mouse nests in a $500 Allis Chalmers "c" fence-row find, and I will bet that is what you had. Them darn things also plugged up an air filter box on my snowmobile one time. The best solution for that problem, that I use now, is to keep plenty of barn-cats around. Congrats. on not needing an engine rebuild. Anyone else want in on this bet? I will put $20 on the mouse nest(s)?

haha a small little screw!!!

I took the head of and noticed the shiny spot... then I looked in the cylinder and found the little piece thermal fused to the piston.
I removed it, and cleaned everything and reused the head gasket.. im gonna need to keep an eye on it to make sure I don't issues with it, but I will order a new one and keep it as a spare.
btw, the tractor had new sparkplugs when I got it, I think the previous owner dropped that little piece in there when he put them in.

I ran the tractor over an hour today, its nice and quit now, and my oil pressure only dropped very little after heating up.

now can start on the 3 point hitch, the middle link where the big spring is has a broken piston.. I cant wait to really start working with the tractor!!

oh.. as you can see, the piston came in contact with the coolant, I forgot the check the flatness of the head, but I think its going to be ok..
my next upgrade will include a temp gage

Hopefully no cracks in your head. I had a cylinder liner in a Perkins diesel fracture and part of the liner went up above the piston and the piston was crunching it up against the head. The head magnafluxed just fine. I think you are right, the guy was probably wondering what happened to that little screw.

I did not see any cracks after I scrubbed it clean.. my biggest worry is that I could develop a crank bearing issue in that cylinder...
