Fuel Injector Pump Replacement

I recently purchased a used 2008 JD 5085M with cab & loader. Machine had 850 hours when I purchased in December 2013. Personally completed full service on tractor at 900 hrs. Problem arose while pulling fertilizer buggy this past week - loss of power, tach surging, wouldn't climb an incline, puffing white/blue smoke, then finally died. I drained water separators, primed, then tractor would start and rev up nicely...for about 50 feet! I took into local JD dealership for troubleshooting and they returned with call today. As I expected a fuel system problem, they confirmed with saying it needed the fuel injector pump replaced. Quoted cost was around $2,350...$1700 for part, 650 labor.

My questions are:
1. Has anyone had any personal experience with this issue? If so, how was it resolved? Cost?
2. What is the difficulty level for novice like myself to replace?
3. Best place to purchase part? JD has to be the highest around...I could be wrong.

900 hrs on an inj pump failure doesn't sound correct. What happened to the day of sending inj pump to fuel inj repair shop? Is that a thing of the past on the newer inj systems? There was a good fuel inj repair place in Waco but I can't think of their name at the moment. $650 sounds high to R&R an inj pump. Is the part they're stating to replace the inj pump or the rail? Is your servicing dealer Brazos Valley? This is the price listed for the pump RE543423 Fuel Injection Pump ADD 2,261.00 USD

I'm not at all familiar with your J.D., however if it has a Yanmar engine, you should have access to a rblt pump. Get the numbers off the pump, and google for rblt diesel injector pumps. We recently bought a set of rblt injectors and a rblt pump from an outfit in Millington Tenn. Beautiful merchandise and excellent people to deal with. Don't know if they do Ag pumps or not, but just about any good diesel shop can. I know everglades diesel in Ft. Lauderdale can, they did the one on my pettibone forklift.

I discussed your tractor problems with a JD technician(friend of mine) and he stated less than 3 hrs to R&R inj pump. He stated 1st thing he would do is replace fuel hose from tank to inj pump as the fuel hose on JD tractors has a looonng history of failures. He also stated he thought that if inj pump was the problem it could be repaired instead of replaced.

This not a Yanmar engine, it's an 85HP JD engine

As TxJim states, start with the easier/cheaper things. Make sure the fuel tank is clean, replace all fuel hoses, make sure fuel filters are properly installed (no missing/damaged gaskets/o-rings). Injector pump failure after only 900hours? Did they say how they determined it was the injector pump? Might want to call Deere corporate for help.
Injector pump should last more than 900 hours.

Question, i thought that federal mandates (EPA) requires a 5 or 7 year warranty on all fuel injector systems...at least thats my understanding

I have called a local tractor mechanic but have not heard back after two messages. Plan on calling JD in the morning to find out what led them to the inj pump. Will call JD corp after if local shop is sure it's the inj pump to see if they have a secret warranty and if not, to mainly voice my utter disappointment.

Well I actually received a call from local dealer (Brazos Valley Equipment) before I got a chance chance to call them. They said they have ordered the part, should have replaced by Wednesday next week, and IT WILL BE WARRANTIED under an emissions warranty. Made my day and impressed they checked into it before I called.

Will report after receive tractor back next week. Thanks to all for your help!
