Well if it's a rental then run it till it falls off! They won't give you trouble for welding on their bucket? Post up some pics of the trailer repair, keep up the good work brother

He bought it from a rental co. I'm sure they would have a duck if the rental co still owned it! Me an them don't really gee haw. I will try to get one of the trailer!
Arc weld- I used 6011 and 6013. I might have more on the bucket. It was tight quarters trying to get the rod in position and I walked the puddle over to that side. It was a good 5/16" gap from tab to bucket.
Ferrari- thanks

I like the horseshoe on the pin, I bet that makes it easy to pull it out :)

Yep the horseshoe is a pretty handy to weld on stuff- handles, hooks, gate latches... It's not just for ponies anymore!

That's where experience comes in. I never use 6013, especially for something under stress but with 7018 you can purposely get the rod to fingernail when it's not possible to have the normal rod angle. This still lets you get an equal size fillet. It takes some practice to do but there are lots of times when welds are in tight quarters where you have to think outside the box. It looks like you might have some undercut on the brackets too where a crack could start.

Thanks. Explain fingernail. I always thought fingernailing is when the filler wire burns inside flux coating leaving flux extending further ( usually on a angle) and it looks like a fingernail. On 7018 I roll that end off with my glove and go back welding.

What I'm picturing is; you suggested welding at steep rod angle almost right against the tab.

It is also when the rod burns off to one side. Like something is wrong with the flux. Happens a lot.
I've been in situation where I had to put 2 or 3 bends in a rod to get to a weld. And maybe only get an inch or two of weld out of each rod. Also been in places where I had to weld 2 or 3-rods together to reach a weld.

WOW!!!
There's been many times that I've had to bend a rod to get there. And many times trying to see through a tiny peephole between objects to see what I'm doing.

But fortunately never had the pleasure of sticking 2 or 3 rods together to get to it.

For about 5-years I worked building tie back systems. Some of the walls we had to weld bolts / all thread / coil rod to the soldier piles to secure the wood lagging. When the carpenter types would tighten the nuts down sometimes the bolts would break off. Well they weren't going to remove the lagging so a weldor could reach in and re-weld the bolt.

Yeah, the (not-so-good) good old days.

I have some of those memories, myself. :confused2:
