When I got a GPS, I found that there was a 3 MPH difference between the speedometer and the GPS on my 2007 Jeep Liberty. Then I noticed the same thing on 2 rental cars, and on my '96 Silverado. I thought maybe it was the GPS, but then I ran through one of those speed checker/warning things, where they have a radar gun setup with a sign that says "Speed limit XX Your Speed YY". Matched the GPS exactly. Since then,and as late as today, I have been through a few more of them, and the speed always agrees with the GPS. Makes me wonder if there is some kind of deliberate error built in to the speedometers to fudge the mileage ratings, or maybe by secret government mandate to slow people down a couple MPH. Same error on 4 different vehicles seems a little to much of a coincidence. IF the GPS is accurate, all those vehicles read 3 MPH slow.

Speedometer will lose accuracy as tires wear. I have checked every vehicle I have owned for the last 20 years. None were more than 3 mph off at 70 mph at any given time.

According to the GPS and the portable radar trailer units, both our '08 Suburban and '99 Silverado Speedo and Odometer are dead on accurate. Our 2000 Honda Accord on the other hand is wrong. The odometer adds a mile to the odometer at roughly 9 tenths of a mile - which corresponds to the speedometer. At 30 MPH it is off by about 2 MPH - I.E. I'm actually only going 28 MPH. When it says 65 MPH I'm actually doing about 59 - 60. Honda was sued a few years ago over this. They said it was a deliberate attempt to limit warranties because people were accumulating miles quicker than they actually were. I blew it off at the time (I didn't have a Honda), but it kinda looks like they didn't change. Our '97 Accord had about the same error rate.

It is not uncommon for Japanese cars to be off so they will look more fuel efficient.

I think you mean Hyundai ... not Honda.

I've owned several Toyotas & Honda's, among many Ford's. I've found them all to be accurate (within a reasonable range).

Ah ok ... I remember Hyundai had a lawsuit a couple years ago for overating their mpg numbers, and had to give gas cards to owners. Didn't realize that gonna had something also.

Both my vehicles have had new tires installed since I have owned them, (2 sets on the Jeep). No change in the difference between GPS and speedo. Tire wear is not the issue. GPS agrees with the radar units, speedo is 3 MPH slow. And 2 rental cars showed the same error, although I didn't have the opportunity to compare to a radar unit.

Vw's are notoriously off by 10kmh or so. Our explorer was off by 12Kmh, but the odometer was bang on....

How can that be?? If the speedo says 100kmh and you are really only doing 90kmh then it should be reflected in total distance travelled over an hour; No?

So odometer says you travelled 100km in 1 hour when the speedo/gps says otherwise. Did you compare gps travelled distance against the odometer?

In older cars, the odometer was gear driven off the speedo cable. For the speedo, the cable would spin a metal cup that surrounded a magnet attached to the speedo needle. The faster the cup spins, the further the magnet gets pulled against the spring and the speedo needle goes up. A small adjustment to the spring could adjust the accuracy on those units. So, yes, on those units, the odometer could be accurate and the speedo could be way off.

Check speed with GPS, check distance with mile markers. and you're right, it doesn't make sense. When we first got our explorer we were amazed at the lack of speed sensation.... and then we checked it with the GPS.
