Car vs SUV safety

Disagree, because the statement "you will have more crashes" doesn't always apply to SUV's. I have driven full size pickups and SUV's from 1978 to the present and never had an accident in any of those. Every accident I have been involved in during a driving career spanning over 45 years would NOT have been avoidable no matter what I was driving. Indeed, the worst accident I was involved in was getting hit head on by a semi tractor/trailer that slid across the centerline and no vehicle (small, midsize, SUV, etc) could have possibly avoided that collision.
That's because everybody avoided you with their quick and nimble cars. :D I'm assuming, if true, the SUV being safer in crash and small better handling car statement to be a statistical statement not an absolute one. Meaning that not every SUV gets into a crash. So far, In almost 40 years of driving, I've only had 4 accidents, two were single vehicle and one was two vehicles and the last one involve a deer. The deer got up and walked away. All were my fault and took place almost 40 years ago except the deer, two months ago. That's driving all kinds of cars and trucks. Currently drive a 1/2 ton 4wd pickup and a subaru that replace the chevy prizm.

What exactly is the difference between an SUV and an all wheel drive station wagon? Seems to me many vehicles are being marketed as "SUVs" (Forester, RAVA, Traverse, etc.) that are really just a station wagon. Or is it just a marketing gimmick now?

To me, an SUV is a full frame vehicle built on a strong chassis, one that has real towing capacity (5000 pounds and up) while unibody vehicles marketed as SUV's are simply what I term "crossovers".

With those requirements can't be many SUV's around!:D

I would add off-road capability to that as well. If it doesn't have 4WD-low, it's not an SUV IMHO.

You got that right.

Just got back from 1,800 mile trip between Missouri - South Carolina in me '02 F150 Supercrew, hound, CFO, two friends and their 4 year old. I've travelled a heap in me day, I can tell ye, ye need a strong vehicle to handle various road, weather conditions. The road's out to get ye!

Oh, and we've been looking at Toyota 4 runner thingamajig. They're built on regular frame, which I like.
