Buying Advice Cabela's selling Compact Tractors

that's a certified cage-free Amish stump right there
I'm sorry, but it's actually a Mennonite stump. They are quite similar but
really should be bringing a lower price. Lower street cred. :D

We chose Tong Yang because they make a high quality tractor, and have a brand new plant with the capacity to grow production. Reputation for brands are established by the quality of the product and the quality of product support provided by whomever sells the tractor to customers. Cabela's has confidence in its ability to provide good product support, which is completely within its own control.

Curious, did Cabela's also pitch the job to other tractor makers, such as Daedong, LS, Shibaura, Yanmar, etc?

Yes, this is true ... TYM makes a nice tractor, but their quality has been called into question with the number of problems I've seen reported on this site. Although, most of the problems I've seen reported were the smaller models, and not usually the T353, T433, T503

So, just me summing up the last couple of pages.

TYM has a new factory and needs to fill production space. They wound up the lowest bidder and thus the Cabela's tractor.

"The Tractor Guy" is an OEM guy and thus has no real understanding of retail. He may understand manufacturing but he doesn't understand retail. I would like a well paying job in an industry I knew little about as he. In "The Tractor Guy's" world the public buys things they are talked into. Not things they need. A color scheme or marketing ploy are his refuge. When that does not and will not pay out they blame a "weird" occurrence. It's what they do.

There are several TYM dealers popping up in East Texas according to the TYM website. They look like a decent tractor at a reasonable price. I am the kind of guy that would buy one just because of the name or color, after all I bought a Boomer 8N. I know there are many threads about how warranty work does not pay and it's figured in on the sales price. The way I see it the warranty is from the manufacturer and serviced by the dealer network. My concerns would be getting warranty work or service done at Cabela's. If you buy there, is their tractor service department adequate or did the mechanic work on boats last week? And since tractors are not their main focus what if Cabela's drops tractors forcing you to go elsewhere for warranty work and you have a problem? How much support will TYM provide you?

This was posted in another thread asking about buying from one TYM dealer and getting warranty work from another closer to him. The guy could save $6000 buying from a TYM dealer who was not the closest to him. The closest TYM dealer did step up and tell him that was a heck of a buy and they would be happy to service his tractor if he bought it from the other dealer. This response was from a poster associated with the TYM USA corporate office. Comments like this straight from any manufacturer would make me hesitate before buying their product. The response I want to hear is our dealer network will take care of you regardless of which dealer you bought from.

Wow....

too harsh Joe, ok we are on our guard, but no need to bash the guy or his company, by assuming the worst of everything.
After 20 years in the business, maybe we should pick his brain instead of insulting him.
It's those "company men" and bean counters who decide if my Kubota seat will squeak for the rest of its life, like it wants to, apparently
by stupid design. or how many rear remotes my tractor can handle. Or whether the dealer gets any additional incentives he can pass on to me.

Geez, would we treat a factory rep from John Deere the same way?
btw, love my suburban Joe, built in your home town.

dealers servicing brand new units bought elsewhere is always a problem. No matter what the vehicle/equipment.
I just find it hard to believe with dealers charging 80-100 an hour labor rate, why they wouldn't want every tractor in their shop
they can fit in, and bill out for... problem is now, getting ready for Spring, dealer service is mobbed doing maintenance, sometimes the little tag
saying "bought here" does help.

That was me...

I was really surprised to see that response from TYM. I live in a fairly remote area, the local dealer is happy to have any business: service or sale. This is a small town where I can walk into the place and sit down with the owner and have a honest, face to face talk. He'd be happy to see me in a TYM...would TYM?

and yes, working on boats does mean they know how to run a service dept. Maybe the boat end worked so well they figured on branching out into tractors. J

This would be my biggest concern. Tractors are much more complex, and running a shop well is a struggle for even established dealers. Its very hard to find truly skilled service tech's who can split a tractor in half and repair a hydro, or lift a cab to get to the parts underneath. Without a steady flow of work the tech's they do have are really never going to learn the products. This issue is big enough that many of our industry trade groups have been researching how to get more skilled tech's into equipment dealerships for sometime.

As for why Cabela's has partnered with Tong Yang Moolsan, it is because as almost everyone who knows the product would agree, it is a very well made tractor. Also, the Tong Yang employees are really terrific people to work with.

I'm sure it had nothing to do with the fact that TYM will sell tractors to anyone, and virtually every other OEM is tied up in other exclusive licensing agreements. Its not like there are lots of options to choose from.

I think the distinction normally becomes one of service versus warranty work. In many/most cases, warranty work isn't billed at the shop hourly rate, it's determined by the manufacturer, and they aren't overly generous with the allowances. So, if things don't go smoothly, the shop is losing out when they could be doing service work with that time....granted, that assumes they have other work waiting. I doubt they frequently lose money on warranty work, but it certainly could happen.

The Cabela's model is different, because they're setting up their own service centers....there's no dealership acting as middle man in their model.
