Buying Advice Cabela's selling Compact Tractors

   / Cabela's selling Compact Tractors #111
Funny/curious thing about our Cabela's is that it's close to the Ohio line. There is a hotel a quarter mile from the store, along with a few chain restaurants, a jerky outlet, a drug store, and an indoor water park. It's become sort of a short trip destination from what I can figure, and many of the cars have Ohio plates. I've overheard people in the Cabela's talking about "when we get back to the hotel", and referencing the water park in the same discussion, so I can only figure that they're staying across the street. I actually think people are making it sort of a weekend trip...drive to Cabela's get a room at the hotel, have dinner at a chain restaurant, get up in the morning, go to the water park, then go to Cabela's etc.

If it's that much of a draw, I can only guess there might be enough appeal/draw that some folks might just buy a tractor from them because of the positive association they have. The other thing is that when you look at (listen to) the people that make up a decent percentage of the customers, I'm not so sure they're the most savvy shoppers who do a lot of product research...just saying. :p

For a while the Cabellas Michigan store was the #1 tourist destination in the state. Go figure.

I noticed this and similar threads related to Cabela's Tractors and I thought it would be helpful to lay out all of the information about this topic. Full disclosure, I am a 20-year veteran of the Ag Equipment industry and I currently serve as an advisor to Cabela's Wildlife & Land Management business, which includes amongst other products, compact tractors and tractor implements. The Tractorbynet community has always been a great source of information related to tractors, and the users themselves represent the best of the small tractor enthusiasts. In the interest of getting all of the correct information presented, here are the key facts:

1. The tractors are indeed built by Tong Yang Moolsan at their brand-new Iksan South Korea (South Korea is home to LG, Samsung, Hyundai to name a few prominant brands) manufacturing plant, which is ISO 9001 certified. Probably the cleanest, most well-organized tractor plant I've ever seen, and I've been fortunate to see many; from North America, South America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe and Asia. This plant is second to none in terms of a focus on quality. Cabela's tractors are now offered in 35HP ROPS, Gear and Hydro, 43HP ROPS and CAB, Gear or Hydro and 50HP ROPS and Cab, Gear and Hydro. The 35s all come with one set of rear remotes, the 43 and 50 come with two sets. All ROPS models come with a canopy as standard, the Cab models are fully decked out with heat/AC, audio systems, front and rear wipers, front and rear work lights and even a leather seat with backrest extension, something not typically found in compact tractors.

2. All tractor attachments and implements are made by Woods Equipment, and are branded Cabela's by Woods. This includes loaders, backhoes, rotary cutters, totary tillers, finish mowers, grading scrapers, rear blades, box scrapers, post-hole-diggers, stump grinders, landscape rakes, root grapples, snow blowers, pallet forks and bale spears.

3. The tires and wheels are made by Titan, and are offered in R1, R3 and R4.

4. Cabela's services all of the equipment in their state-of-the-art service shops located at every Cabela's Wildlife & Land Management location, either in a facility attached to the main building or within a mile or two of the store. Cabela's has been servicing boats with outboard engines up to 300HP, so they already understand the connection between machinery sales and service. For tractors, they added overhead cranes, high capacity forklifts, new tools, etc., and most important of all, experienced tractor technicians. Cabela's has the capability to perform any repair, including splitting a transmission if needed.

5. Cabela's has done several things to enhance the Tong Yang tractor, including the installation of steel shields mounted in the undercarriage to protect the fuel tank, filters, hoses and other exposed areas of the tractor. Cabela's is known for understanding how their customers use their products, and they believe that taking these extra steps to protect an investment is the right thing to do.

6. As for pricing, we all know that list price and final price are two very different things. When sitting down to get an actual quote, the Cabela's equipment prices are far below those of the top two brands, and are highly competitive with all of the others. Considering the Woods implements, Titan Tires & Wheels, enhanced shielding, five year powertrain and three-year full machine warranty--all parts and labor included with no deductible, canopy standard on all ROPS models, Cabela's believes that they offer a lot of value and they back everything up. Cabela's has trademarked the term "Legendary Customer Service," and it is deeply embedded in their culture. The customer IS always right as far as they are concerned.

7. As far as whether offering compact tractor and implements fits the Cabela's brand; consider this. The Rural Lifestyler that buys and uses compact tractors is the very customer that lives the outfoor lifestyle that Cabela's has served for over 50 years. From selling trout flies through the mail during their humble beginnings in Western Nebraska, to having over 50 locations now open in North America, with another 23 under construction, Dick, Mary and Jim Cabela have always had a sense for finding new ways to serve their customers. Though Dick passed away just last month, Mary and Jim are not only still with us, Jim is the Cabela's Chairman of the Board. He was also amongst the first to buy a Cabela's tractor. Pretty amazing stuff when you think about it.

I hope that readers will find this information useful; at least it is an accurate overview of the key facts. Above everything, tractorbynet members want the straight scoop. Anything other than that doesn't serve anyone very well.

Here is a link to the Cabela's Wildlife & Land Management website if anyone is interested. Again, be careful not to confuse list price with selling price.

Wildlife & Land Management : Cabela's

It's pretty amazing to see the range of responses that sending the attached post can bring. Went from tractors to pickup trucks to to Sears, Home Depot, politics to ethics. Surprised it didn't lead to where Malasia Flight 370 is. Everyone knows that this sort of thing can happen on forums, and I guess it comes with the territory. All we wanted to do was present the facts about Cabela's tractors to tractor enthusiasts, even identified myself as being an advisor to Cabela's, a step that many others do not do; that is, let everyone know if they have a personal interest sided with one opinion or another. People will decide for themselves whether or not Cabela's is a good place to buy a tractor. Opinions to the contrary are just opinions. However, if everyone would just read through the above post and determine for themselves whether or not the right things are being considered, that's all anyone could ask for. If we don't place that post, then the TBN community dicusses the whole topic without knowing exactly what's up. Thanks to the many TBN members that said that they appreciated that. One thing that I nor Cabela's will never do is criticize another person's business, nor actively cheer for its failure. Thanks very much for reading.

I'd still like to know why Cabela's chose to market the TYM tractors ... and/or, if it was TYM that pursued the deal? Did Cabela's have other brands to choose from? Was TYM just the least expensive offering to maximize profits?

TYM doesn't have the best record on this forum ... just curious why that choice was made.

For a while the Cabellas Michigan store was the #1 tourist destination in the state. Go figure.

no surprise really. It's a huge adult toy store, and I mean fulfill just about every fantasy but that one...adult toy store.
Cabela enables adventures, so we go in there looking for something to help us have fun. And we find more things when we get there, if we have the time
to look at everything.
I owned a retail electronics business in my home town for five years. Exact same thing. Some necessary stuff but mostly, since I was a franchise and could do what I wanted, as long as I stocked all those resistors...and I did. But I had at least half a dozen guys who came in routinely to see what was new.
This was, thankfully, before Amazon.com. I got out just in time.

Let's be honest, for most of us, it's fun to go to Tractor Supply. We like to see what's new and wander around at least a little.
And Cabela has the wandering around part all taken care of, lots of interesting stuff to catch your eye, and your vacation imagination,
your mountain cabin imagination. They aren't targeting the main agricultural market, they are targeting a niche lifestyle market.
And I bet they sell some tractors too. If they provide a really enjoyable purchasing experience. And forget 5% off those kind of list prices.
That fat corporate bone price is going to get a trimming. So instead of taking 15% off, they take 10% off. But ten off an inflated list still produces
a final selling price that's going to take some real shmoozing to sell unless the buyer is really clueless.

If I didn't have a local dealer, I'd rather buy a tractor from one of the big advertisers on this site.
First you know they really know their product. And more importantly, how to farm with it if you are total newbie.
Unless someone is just mowing lawn with their tractor, there's a lot to learn. And you can sure hurt yourself, as we know, if you screw up.
Usually if you call the dealer, you talk to the same person. I'd love to know what Cabela's service positioning is, whether they are offering any perks.
Like a free pickup and delivery, free oil change, something.

And maybe they don't have to give anything away for free.
Time will sure tell.
where are industry sales stats posted?
this might be fun to track.

I hope TractorGuy does not take this personally, this is just the skeptical vetting that goes on here all the time whenever anything new
pops up. I'm really glad you posted what you did; it was quite classy as is your approach.

We chose Tong Yang because they make a high quality tractor, and have a brand new plant with the capacity to grow production. Reputation for brands are established by the quality of the product and the quality of product support provided by whomever sells the tractor to customers. Cabela's has confidence in its ability to provide good product support, which is completely within its own control.

That was a very kind thing to say, and it is very much appreciated.

It is interesting, and as a former manager in the Kansas City Kansas store I can tell you the real reason. It was cheap and it looked good. After this company went public it changed into a different place. Like all publically traded companies it is all about bottom line. When I started there (before KCK opened) we had over 300 on staff....now you can't find someone in the store to help you and it looks like a walmart with so much crap stuffed into each inch of floor space. Most of the old guard is gone, the ones that loved the outdoors and wanted to take care of customers.

Cabelas was at one time special, now it is walmart.

Good luck with your tractor sales, at least you did not buy out a small boat operation like you did to get the boats in KCK, then can everyone that was in the old company.

Come on dude, that's a certified cage-free Amish stump right there...totally worth a hundo!

No fossil fuels were used in the harvesting of this designer stump.
