Got my new registration in the mail today for my new 2014 Silverado. Noticed that the GVW was listed at 10,000#:eek: I looked on the sticker that came with the truck and it had it listed it at 7200#. Needless to say I high-tailed it up to the DMV to straighten them out. After showing them the window sticker with the listed GVW and arguing with them for what seemed like forever, I finally convinced them to list the truck at 8000#. I did this because the $80 fee was the same for a truck with a 7001-8000 GVW. Has anyone else had a major screw-up like this before with their DMV?

No clue! What I do know is they haven't the faintest idea the difference between what GVW and GCVW is. She was trying to tell me I could only tow 2300# or some such foolishness and I was like "um you're wrong lady". I said "see this window sticker? Here is the GVW for THIS vehicle". I could tell it went over her head. Only reason I set it at 8000 instead of the listed 7200 was the fee was going to be the same anyways.

You need to get with your state troopers as to see what the law is as they are the ones that enforce that law. But being a Chevy technician in ohio we have always gone by the gvw not the gcvw. I think the GCVW is gross carring vehicle wheight by the way, do you have a 1500, 2500. or 3500. May not matter but, it is not how much you tow but how much load. I know she is wrong, Tony D.

We have always gone by gvw in SC too. I even went to the SCDMV website to double check and see what the fees were for various gvw's. Mine falls into the 7001-8000 range and is an $80 fee so that's why I went ahead and listed it higher as the fee wouldn't be any different. I have a 1500 and it has a 7200 gvw according to the window sticker as well as the sticker on the door. To be technical, the gvw is actually LESS then 7200 at 7175(5218 curb weight/1957 max payload). I can't even imagine how they would even allow a truck like mine to have a 10,000 gvw because it would GREATLY exceed the max payload. She tried to tell me the gvw had to do with towing and I said "no it does not!". I even showed her on the website with my phone where it stated that I was right. Couldn't they look at the curb weight of the vehicle and tell it was a 1/2 ton truck??

I think she was confused by thinking the 7200 gvw was just the weight of the truck. The reason I say that is I remember her making the statement of "that doesn't include the occupants and how much you're hauling" and I was thinking "say what??"

My registration for my F250 says 12,000. The sticker on the truck says 8800. 12000 is the smallest weight bracket for farm vehicles I think. It's pretty cheap at $45/year.:thumbsup:

In our state we buy a truck tag and in my dodge 3500s case it was $78 to register GCWR of 26,000#s
