Why did South Carolina put my GVW at 10,000# for a 1/2 ton truck?

What do you have your gvwr listed as with the DMV concerning the Titan and F150 if you don't mind me asking?

I have 9,000# plates on both. The F150 is my dad's actually. It's only $12 more to go from 7K to 9K.

In Indiana there is a car plate that covers any car or SUV no matter the weight. It can be a Smart Car or a Diesel Excursion. Trailer and truck plates go by weight. 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 20, 25 thousand, ect if I remember right.

Got my new registration in the mail today for my new 2014 Silverado. Noticed that the GVW was listed at 10,000# I looked on the sticker that came with the truck and it had it listed it at 7200#. Needless to say I high-tailed it up to the DMV to straighten them out. After showing them the window sticker with the listed GVW and arguing with them for what seemed like forever, I finally convinced them to list the truck at 8000#. I did this because the $80 fee was the same for a truck with a 7001-8000 GVW. Has anyone else had a major screw-up like this before with their DMV?

I'm not sure i understand why you were so concerned with having it lowered? was it cheaper at the 8k than the 10? ,other than that whats it matter. Maryland used to put 10k on all class 1 truck tags but I think now use 7k, I know my md tagged c1500 is 7k GVW on registration and 6999 on the door.

Where my truck is rated now is $80. If I upped it to 9001-10,000 it would be $100. Here's the catch though. The county I pay my property taxes (truck taxes, land is separate, go figure) they will blister you for having a 10000 gvwr! I haven't paid my property taxes yet on this truck but I'm betting they will be between $700-800 easily. PLUS your $80 DMV fee and $15 license plate renewal. I put my gvwr where it is just to see how bad the taxes were going to be, if they aren't as bad as I'm thinking then I'll up it to 9000 or so. My friend has a 2011 King Ranch F-350. His truck taxes were $2,200 last year! They tax you based on what the sticker price of your truck was, not what you paid for it. Then they tax you on how much it weighs and all kinds of other stupid stuff. This county is run by some really crooked people so the taxes are outrageous. Third highest in the state.

Well you just made a CA resident feel a whole lot better. I thought I was being robbed at $450 a yr for my GMC 2500HD Duramax, but see, we don't pay property tax on personal vehicles, not separate of DMV. Don't pay them on my 5th wheel either.

A brand new $60,000 truck would prob have a registration fee of about $60-700 a yr, and it goes down each yr. No property tax.

Thanks for the mood uplift. Combine that with my $150 month, yr round average utility bills (total and that's with propane heat) and life is getting better by the minute.

The way it is here in MO and the way that your insurance company could look at it in the event of an accident is the vehicle should be licensed for the GCWR. That would be even more than 10K. The only thing I can really see it affecting is the more you tow the more important it is to verify the braking system. My dually is licensed for 24K and I have yearly inspections, I cant go the 2 years between renewals.

Here in NC I pay $105 for a 10K tag on my F350 dually...
Since it is a 2003 model I am not sure if the taxes go up exponentially with the 10K tag...
I know that a 26K tag will run you in the $500 to $600 range...
I expect this was an effort on their part to get more money...
Thankfully you caught it before it was too late...
