And.... as has been kicked around a lot lately in other threads..... likely keeps you under the magic 10,000# combined that various jurisdictions use to promote revenue (aka safety).

There's wrong, and there's the Govt version of "wrong".

I hope that's a nice smooth highway.

Hitting a rough portion could pole-vault the truck.

:D

Ooooo. I actually saw it happen once. It was a miracle of good luck timing on my part to be in the right place/right time and looking (the bad luck was all on their part...). Driving the freeway from LA to San Diego (805?) on business with 3 other guys back around 2000. Up in front of us a couple hundred yards in another lane is a beaten old Ford Ranger driving along. Nothing special. Suddenly I watch the front of the driveshaft separate from the tranny, drop and catch a crack in the freeway. The ***** end of that truck pole vaulted a good 6' in the air, the driveshaft flipped backwards under the bumper, they waggled around a lot, and small metal parts flew everywhere. I just happened to be looking up at the time and saw the entire thing take place, but nobody else in the car did until the worst was past. It was amazing to watch. They swerved a bit and then coasted over to the shoulder. Impressed that they didn't lose it or really flip/roll. One of the coolest things I ever saw, even though those guys surely didn't think so... I don't think I'll ever have the luck of timing like that the rest of my life. 2 seconds either way and I would have been going "what happened?" I'm sure they had to replace the seats along with the driveshaft...

makes ya want to go wire up a coat hanger 1" unde the drive shaft as a cradele to catch it should that happen. ;)

Odd that they concluded from this one car that no other cars would flip. Something with a longer drive shaft and a more solid frame at the point where the shaft pushes on the car seems like it may have different results.

Today a person pulled out in front of me towing a small trailer, looked to be 5 x 8 single axle, He speed up quickly but he was in no danger of me rear ending him, ( I never tailgate or be vindictive ) I just slow down and let some distance get between the two of us, when suddenly I seen trailer gate slam down and a sheet of plywood go airborne, By the time I got stopped the plywood was right in front of my truck with what I though was nails sticking out... as I went around i could see they were small bolts all in the plywood, I think he had the plywood bolted to the gate and when he got up to speed.. estimated 75 mph the wind must have forced the latches or pins that held the gate upright either bent or broke the welds, resulting in what happen, Lucky for him the generator he had in the trailer didn't come out,
He drag the gate about 500 ft as he slowed to pull over,
So those of us who put plywood on the gates should think about the wind resistance it can cause and be sure it has strong latch pins and good welds for the pins,;)
