Sombody needs to invent a poor man's muck machine. I have thought about rigging up some kind of anchor point on each side of the muck pond where a winch type rig could be rigged to drag a bucket back and forth across the muck. Haven't seen any 100 HP winches laying around lately have you?

A drag line and a good operator would be best for clearing the existing pond, but not the cheapest option.

I thought it was Archimedes who said give me a lever and a place to stand and I will move the world.

If I did the math right a 10 foot section of a 8 foot dam with 3 to 1 slope and a 8 foot top would be around 100 yards. If your 6 foot bucket carry's .5 yard that is 200 trips. With a little experimenting and timing you can get a pretty good estimate. As for mucking out #1 big backhoe, #2 help a contractor clean out the mud from his tracks or if you try it yourself dig in virgin soil so you don't sink and put a heavy counter weight on the 3 point to help balance the wet muck.

That yellow seat snippy comment is only revealing your equipment envy. :D:rolleyes:

You quit attacking me on the delay vs stuck thingie, so you are now going after my color preferences? Well, you can't keep up with a woman and all the shades and colors that she can accessorized with.

Raised on a deere, the pond your talking about got dry enough 4 summers ago for the Dexta to make about 20 passes with the grader before I slipped a rear and dug myself into a jam. I got a lot of dirt moved in those 20 passes. With a typical dry summer it should now be in about the same shape as 4 years ago. IF you broke the existing dam, and spent your time digging out above it, by the time you were done with your digging, the existing pond would be dry enough to make enough passes to get another few feet out of it. Then build up your new dam and let it rain.
the area is already Coprs of Engineer approved for runnoff with a culvert built under the RR berm.

LOL you sound like you know a lot about this particular pond. But you need to realize the truth about what others here have been saying about dealing with this kind of muck and how tough it is to deal with even after years of severe drought. Tell us about it after you have completed the job and not torn up a bunch of machinery.:)

So, you actually think you can get through this without tearing up a bunch of stuff eh? If it werent for the American farmer tearing up stuff we wouldnt have half the advancements we enjoy in this great country of ours. The way I look at it, every time I tear up stuff Im doin my part as an American!

A long time ago my wife wanted a riding arena and we decided on a spot that wasn't quite level enough. The only eqpt I had was a Farmall H with a plow and and IH450 with a 2pt blade. I started plowing the high side and when I had some plowed up I would hop on the 450 and drag it to the low side. After several hours of doing this it was level enough. Then of course she wanted fencing around it but that didn't happen right away of course. What surprised me the most was how smooth the project went.
