I will be interested to get your opinion of the new corn variety early July or so. I am still planting Silver Queen, (1) because I have planted it so many years (2) I still have some seed. I will be reordering though this year and will try something new. There is one that starts with an M (Merit maybe) and some folks swear by AMBROSIA.

Yes, I have heard of Merit. Never ate it though. It's readily available down here in South LA. I don't think I recall anything about Ambrosia. I've never tried Silver Queen either. But I have seen the seeds in the hardware store.

I planted some last year. If you like really sweet, sweet corn, it should fit the bill. Actually, too sweet for my taste. However, it crossed with part of my patch of Silver King, making it a bi-color corn, and was just pretty tasty. I will intentionally plant the two beside each other this year for the same affect.

I bought my seed there last year, and was really pleased with all of it. And, free shipping on any amount of seed, although it says Free shipping with $50.00 minimum. Once you select your seed, and put it in the cart, it will tell you it's free shipping. Beats anywhere around here in bulk amounts by at least a couple bucks a pound. With free shipping..., why not..?? Be sure and check prices on all veggies. Especially the heirloom 'maters.

I ordered mine on a Wed. morning, and it arrived here on Sat. from Idaho. Not bad...

I paid $4.00 for per ounce and ordered 5 ounces. May have paid too much, not sure. I just wanted to try it because of what that elderly man told me, comparing it to G-90.
I haven't mentioned it yet but if anyone hasn't tried Funks G-90 sweet corn, YOU ARE MISSING OUT. Not sure if it will grow in every state, but it does excellent down here.

I thought the Serendipity is supposed to be yellow and white kernels?

...Thought I'd post a pic of the G-90 that I just took out the freezer from last year's Spring garden.
Fixin to boil it on the stove! I just can't get enough of this stuff. I introduced it to my fiancée, who doesn't eat much out a garden and she loves it!
I freeze corn in the shucks. Never done it any other way but I would.

I thought I'd provide an alternate view of what a garden looks like on April 10:

We haven't touched it yet - everything you see that's green are weeds. Nothing tender will go in until mid to late May. Average last frost is May 12, but we've seen some hard freezes after that. It's 65 and sunny today, but upper 20s are forecast as next Tuesday's low.

The only thing actually growing is the over-wintered kale seen in the far back on the left. It has a few sprouts trying to grow:


The peppers, tomatoes, and several kinds of greens are now enjoying the greenhouse:

Very nice looking plants in the greenhouse!

My grandfather has a big hornets nest he got out of the woods many years ago. Has it hanging from the rack of a whitetail buck on his wall.

I seen a big hornets nest in the woods a long time ago. It was huge! I didn't go near it because it was already occupied and I didn't feel welcomed!

Just about got the tractor back together from working on a cooling issue that I may or may not had (yeah I know, confusing right..)

Garden is drying up quickly and I think I may be able to get in there and do some light tilling.... Till, let the sun and air hit it, till some more and let the sun and air hit it, and just keep repeating the process until it's how I want it.
You would be amazed how fast dirt will dry out by keeping it turned over like that.

Soon as I finish up with the tractor and get the dirt ready (yes, once more!) then I'm putting some corn in the ground!! Hopefully this will take place within the next couple days. If not, surely by the beginning or middle of next week if we don't get any rain.

The elderly folks around here have usually always planted on Good Friday from what my Grandmother was telling me.
But I don't wanna wait that long. If I have to replant anything (and I hope not, like last year!) I have the "EarthWay" garden seeder that makes planting so much easier. It's the model 1001-B.

I bought it in the Spring of last year from a place in Tennessee. I don't remember the name of the place though. I remember it being thru * bay. It was the cheapest price anywhere I could find at that time. There's other seeders on the market that are a lot better than this one, but for what I do, the EarthWay was well worth the money. I have no intentions as of now, but if I ever decided to upgrade I'd get the "Hoss Planter".

I have one of those. If the soil is well worked and with larger seeds (corn, peas, etc) it works well. I don't like it on small seeds (carrots, etc.)
