Tractor Carry All-Winter project now complete!

Hi Gordon-

Just mounted the carry all for the first time this week-fresh out of the workshop.

I did drive the splitter a short distance the other day and it seemed fine. Backing up may be another issue??

I usually drive up to the garage, unhook it and pull the splitter in with the dolly that I
recently made-works great! So backing up is not a concern for my purposes.

The hitch that I used was from Harbor Freight. I shopped around and decided on theirs. It is a good size for the carry all and well made.
If you would like I can send a link as to the specific hitch from their website. Can't beat the price too.

I also ran pt boards perpendicular to the floor boards to spread the weight. I will attempt to add a photo of the original set showing the underside and the hitch.

Thanks for the kind words regarding the carry all. It works great. The thing I appreciate the most is the stability it added to the tractor.
Much easier and safer to to the work that I need to do with the carry all attached.

I see you put a hitch for your splitter on it and I have a question about that.. I was going to do that on mine as it seems it would be real handy. I didn't do it because I thought cornering would be hard because of the big swing the rear end takes. Does it work OK or is it hard to manage and tend to jackknife

Gordon- Here is the photo of the under side. The trailer hitch was not mounted when the photo was taken, but the large mounting bolts are in place.

Thanks for the reply. I was worrying more about going forward and making fairly sharpe turns thinking the corner of the carry-all would smack the splitter as it swung out. After seeing yours I will have to try it.

Gordon-I chose to mount mine recessed a bit so I would not smack my shin on it. My hitch insert comes out a ways, so I am now hoping that helps...we'll see soon.

If you mounted yours out more, you might eliminate that issue??

Also, when I mounted my hitch, I added a 2x4 back plate that the hitch rests against. I drilled 2 holes in the back plate of the hitch and then through the wooden back plate. Inserted 2.... 3/8" bolts to bolt the hitch to the back plate in addition to the 2....5/8" mounting bolts through the floor boards.

Tractor Carry All is now constructed, attached and working.

One remark: I see you attached the red toolbox on the ROPS. Are you not using it?

That's also a slip on mount on the orange box. When I need to put the rops up, the box slips off.

Wow, looks really nice underneath but you know never to use drywall screws with pressure treated right? I'd remove them and replace with some proper screws to protect your project.

Here are the photos of the wood splitter photos, as requested. Sorry for the delay in getting them to you.

Notice the skid bolts on the larger table. They are mounted there to hold a piece (that is waiting to be split) away from the piece that is being split.
When you are ready, just slide the wood (that sat above the skid bolts, on the wooden table) over the skid bolts and onto the rail for splitting.

Split a ring in half. Push one of the halves onto the large table and above the skid bolts. Split one half and then slide the second into position.

Best to split with barkside down-on the round/not the flat side of the wood. This way the wood does not get trapped between the rail and the table edges and ruff up the wooden tables.

The last 2 photos show the plywood work surface that I use when the splitter is tilted up to split the larger/heavier rings. Really helps slide the big rings and halves in and out when spitting.
