Go Away GM

I don't give two boots about GM as a company. I prefer their full size trucks but will never touch another one of their cars. The key stuck in my moms 2008 Malibu and you couldn't get it out. She wasn't driving, it was sitting in the driveway. That's when I told her we were taking that pos and getting something else. It's amazing how good their trucks are but the rest of their vehicle lineup is junk in my opinion.

See, I always thought the opposite. I felt the cars were not bad for the money but the trucks were 2 model changes behind Ford and Toyota.

I'm surprised that someone hasn't come up with, "it was the old GM, not us" defense.

They have
GM seeks U.S. court protection against ignition lawsuits | Reuters

GM emerged from bankruptcy protection in 2009 as a different legal entity from the so-called old GM. Under those terms, the "new GM" shed liability for incidents predating its exit from bankruptcy, and any lawsuit involving pre-bankruptcy issues must be brought against what remains of old GM

I dont know that there was any real precedence for the bailout of a car company before, so if the gov't would take them over again, pay off the ignition liability issues and sell off the remainder to the rest of the car makeing world. I for one think we (as the tax payers) would be better off.

I was going to short the stock at the onset of the news (as a ME who worked for Caterpillar controls group) I could tell it was going to be a big deal. But Ive been shocked to see that the stock has barely dropped when toyota took a 33% hit on the floor mat throttle BS. Never occurred to me that GM (new) would simply just shirk billions in responsibility. But in hindsite I dont see why i was surprised, Its just the latest example of BIG money screwing over the rest of us.

I have always been biased against GM. It goes back to trouble my Dad had with Chevys 50 years ago. When I needed a car for my kids to drive to school a few years ago I bought a new 2010 Cobalt. I drive it for work now because of the good gas mileage. It hasn't been recalled but it has had wires corrode in two and various plastic parts break. With 45,000 miles it looks a lot worse than a Ford and a Dodge I have with about 100,000 miles each. This was my first GM and probably my last.

I don't see them disappearing but if they did.. The other mfrs would pick up the slack and would need people to fill positions. It's supposed to be survival of the fittest. Not survival of the company who greases the most politicians. .. They ( GM) make a ****** product and have for some years. They need to man up

You're probably correct, but it is still very selfish of anyone to wish bad things to happen, when so many employees and their families would be directly affected.

While its a really nice social experiment to try to save jobs, the basics of economics can never be outrun. GM success or failure isn't based on goodness or badness, its based on whether or not they can sell cars at a profit. When they can't they will go under. It was a social experiment to bail them out when they couldn't make a profit; gov intervention in business. The best way to bankrupt a country is to allow it to intervene in the affairs of ailing businesses in the interest of the state. Russia is the perfect example. The downfall of communism was that there was no money in it.
Agree.

And for those who think GM, or any other company, should 'pay up' or 'man up'' (whatever that means), should remember (or learn for the first time) money to pay fines and settle lawsuits comes from only one place, the consumer.

Never been a GM guy since I had a Pontiac in high school. This doesn't really brighten the prospects for me ever having one.
But in reality I'm sure they've all shirked some responsibility to the consumer at some point.

Yea, true for customers who buy their product. Count me out.

i don't wish bad things on the workers.. just those responsible.. i wish they would be eld accountable.

to bad a huge multi company industry wide correction couldn't occur, gm be disbanded as an entity.. and a group of car manufacturers take over and keep operating ( restructure ).. the existing facilities and some/all of the non responsible employees.

To be honest I wish Chevrolet would break away from GM and stand alone selling nothing but trucks and suv's. I agree that the trucks have been behind Ford since around 2004. The reason I keep going back to them is because I have a good friend who's a salesman and always gets me a smoking deal and the service department has always been great. I get spoiled because I'll go to another dealer and not get near the same treatment and get mad.
