Ha! Ten years ago just before Christmas, I took a large tape-backup library unit to the UPS distribution center to ship. Bigger than a big PC cpu unit and over twice as heavy, in a carton padded with old lawn furniture cushions.

The guy who took it over the counter said this will make an excellent ram to send down and clear the spiral chute when it gets gets jammed with smaller Christmas present packages.

It arrived undamaged and earned me complimentary ebay feedback for my protective packaging. Dunno what damage it did to other people's shipments. :D

Overall, I like UPS - BUT - If your item is fragile, they will prove it! Those guys drive those trucks like dune buggys. For fragile, my best luck is surprisingly with the USPS.
We received 2 rackmount battery backups (APC Smart-UPS XL 3000VA RM IIRC) in a row at work that had been dropped HARD on their fronts. They had hit hard enough that the front of the UPS came through the wall of the box. We refused shipment on the first (due to shipping damage), they sent a second which arrived in the same condition. We refused it and a 3rd was shipped. This time (per the delivery guy), the terminal manager personally inspected it before it left the warehouse and said "they cant refuse this one, it is undamaged" (he was correct).

I'm always amazed at the stuff I see getting dropped off at the UPS / Fedex counter. And they always say stuff like "It's really fragile, please take good care of it"

I do my best to stay clear of all large trucks on the road. I figured out the physics a long time ago, but confirmed by talking to truck drivers - most hate to haul steel coils - spooky/dangerous load When Things Go Wrong.

I work exclusively with Overweight/Over dimensional motor carriers and can affirm that steel coils are responsible for the majority of OW/OD collisions/loss of load. In speaking with representatives for the Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association along with State Police, the general consensus is that load securement is the #1 culprit and most drivers/carriers simply don't understand the proper way to secure a steel coil or understand that once 48,000lbs gets moving it doesn't want to stop.

If you are in the family truckster with the fam behind or beside a flatbed semi hauling a tarped circular object located in the center of the bed, stay away from it in any corners. Best to just stay away from it period. Some of the coils themselves are 60,000lbs and some haulers are permitted to haul more than one coil at a time, with a max gross up to 120,000lbs. It's like hauling a 60,000lb marble that just wants to roll around.

I've got loads of pictures of OW/OD collisions but not allowed to share them publicly...sorry.

ditto that.... i have seen some stuff slid across the counter that likely didn't survive getting past the window.. let alone destination.

I've heard that copper coils can be just as bad. Or was I misinformed?
