the biggest factor in MPG is YOUR right foot.
i'm happy with my diesel truck MPG as opposed to my gas truck MPG doing the same things

There's nothing wrong with wanting a diesel truck with good mileage. In case you haven't noticed, a VW TDI won't do what a diesel truck does. This is a discussion about which truck gets the best mileage, not which car gets the best mileage.
They did make a Rabbit diesel pickup.

I don't think you get these in the states great mileage from a two litre turbo diesel

Yet. They're trying to bring them here to grab market share from the Chevy Colorado and Nissan Frontier diesel market 2015 and forward.

My neighbor recently bought an old VW diesel pickup.
The exhaust is shot, and the coolant system leaks pretty bad, but he swears it gets 40 mpg.
My 04 F250 PSD (6.0) gets 14.5 MPG, empty or towing a 6K trailer, doesn't seem to matter.
I have a tall service body on it, so I figure the wind drag doesn't help...
I also have a 92 F150, with the 5.9L straight six and 5 speed stick.
Gets 12 mpg.

Volkswagen Amarok is good for 31 mpg according to the sales blurb

If you could not tell. The purchase the VW TDI remark was directed to the bulk of diesel pickup drivers that use the pickup for" cheap economical "diesel personal transportation , hauling groceries and golf clubs. Yup they NEED a diesel pickup.
As for somebody that honestly hauls a load Then purchase a gasser pickup. If you use your pickup 40-50 hrs a week doing nothing else than hauling 26,000 lbs. get a diesel.
