Diesel truck with best MPG

They did make a Rabbit diesel pickup.

YEs. Cool little trucks. We had one when I was growing up in Wyoming. It would only go 45 up the pass between Laramie and Cheyenne but it got around 45 mpg. They still bring a pretty good $ if you can find a nice one.

Owned a VW Rabbit in diesel. thing couldn't get out of it's own way but 52mpg was hard to beat!
I've been looking for one of the old diesel rabbit trucks for a while now and just hope I have the cash in hand when i find it.

They can get out of their own way now. People rarely discuss one of the main advantages to diesel and that is better driving dynamics, for example, mid-range torque. My Passat TDI pulls like a V8 where it is best needed like merging onto a freeway or holding speed on a long grade, doing so seemingly effortlessly. The engine doesn't have to downshift one or two gears and rev the snot out of itself to accelerate, like a gas engine. I don't, however need to light up the tires from a standstill, which seems important to some people.

I have an 01 Ram 2500, 5.9l HO Cummins diesel with a Quadzilla Adrenaline programmer, 4.10 gears, 6-spd NV5600 manual trans, 35" BFG T/A KO tires. I recently went on a 915 mile round trip to pick up my tractor. Towed an empty 2k# trailer down, and coming back with my JD4600 (~6300#) on the trailer.

If my math serves me correctly, my increase in tire size nets me a 13% difference in numbers of rotations per mile. I use that for the difference in mileage of my stock speedo. My trip meter read 810 miles from when I left and when I came home. 810 * 1.13 = 915.3 total miles. I burned roughly 50-55 gallons of fuel (fuel sending units aren't exactly accurate to tank size).

At 915.3 miles, burning 50 gallons of fuel, I averaged 18.3 mpg. At 55 gallons of fuel burnt, I averaged 16.6 mpg.

Unloaded, the best I've ever ran was 22.4 mpg. I don't have a dash mpg indicator, this is all done with pencil at the pump between fill-ups.

If it runs fine I would strongly consider it even at that price. I recently sold my boat, a Bonneville and a Ranger 4.0....so this means I have room for a rabbit truck? Hmmmm
I would have a hard time paying half that for one of those.

Over in UK the experts are now telling us that diesels pollute and we should drive petrol (gas) - having previously said diesel was better for environment as it produces less CO2 per mile driven.

Don't you just love 'em?

Why is a gas engine briefly reving up into it's power band a bad thing?
