On the dial where you set the height of cut, are those numbers supposed to be the inches of grass length ?
Or are they meant to be used as reference numbers ?

They are reference numbers for the most part. They are usually close to correct, but.... they deck can be adjusted to correspond exactly with them if you know what you're doing. I did it to my GX335 back when I bought it

The deck doesn't seem to travel much up and down with the hydraulic lift. I had it set at 3.5 on the dial and it was cutting the grass very short. It didn't seem like it was leaving the grass 3.5 inches.

It sounds like the linkage needs adjusting. Like I said, the dial is a reference more than anything, at least until you set it correctly.

I will work on getting it set correctly tomorrow and let you know how it works.
What number do you normaly keep yours set to ?

Those numbers represent inches --- but as has already been said, it only works when you get the deck leveled and set to the inch length that the dial is showing. The dial rotates an eccentric cam under the tractor deck ---- the dial should/can only be rotated with the deck in the full up position. The dial rotates easily if the deck is full up and you should feel a little detent at each height position. It is possible that the cam is no longer pinned to the shaft that rotates as you turn the knob above the tractor deck and or the spring is missing/broken --- you may want to look at what's happening under the tractor deck as you rotate the knob.

You asked what setting we mow at ---- my deck is adjusted such that the numbers represent inches and I typically mow anywhere from 2 1/2 to 3 inches.

Very good reply.

If I mow at 3.5 It is way too short. Something must be wrong, right ? Where do I look first for a problem ? What is the procedure for setting the blades to the height the dial is set for ?
Thank you guys for all the help.

Obviously your dial is not in concert with your actual HOC. Like the bruceatlam said, you need to look at the dial. You will need to take the mower deck off (which is very easy to do) and see if the cam is turning when you turn the dial knob, or of there is a problem with something being broken off of the cam. Then go from there.

When I turn the dial, I can feel the clicks so I think that means The cam is turning since it does change the cutting height, but wit the dial set all the way on 4 it still cuts too short. Am I right in thinking the dial and the blades need to be adjusted to be in sync ?
