Here it seems a lot is "basement monsters" - 20 something guys living in mom's basement. Usually no DL, due to drinking and/or drugs.

any local high schools in the area ?

just a quick dash between classes ... and then back again ....

not always the "usual suspects" ....

a well placed LOUD horn up high and out of reach on a 5 minute timer can do wonders ... as well as some cheap cameras up high (working or not) and signs saying "smile, for the camera "

I had my gate chain cut less than a month after buying our property. Filed a police report, and made it clear to the sheriff that vandalism, and trespassing isn't tolerated. My house is almost a 1/2 mile off the road and not visible, I have ADT but I'm under now illusion that is will stop a break-in or catch the bad guys. I just pray that if it does happen we are not home, as there will only be one side of the story to tell...

There is a grade school on the other side of the woods... High Schools are miles away.

My sliding glass door does have reflective film from years ago... maybe it added just enough strength... the punch marks are clear as day and there are a lot of them near the door latch part.

I picked up a $50 21" x 35" piece of obscure glass on the way home from work and put it in for the neighbor... she has had a rough go the last couple of years with radiation, chemo and surgery.

Took family jewelry and some cash... nothing that couldn't be easily concealed... surprised entry and exit was through a broken window instead of opening a door once inside.

The police situation is basically non existent unless crime in progress.

About a month ago, on my way to work I noticed a front door open at a house along my route... looked strange so I stopped... didn't know the people except from driving by... it was a burglary in progress and 5 police showed up in short order... as I approached the open front door calling out loudly I saw a lot of stuff piled just inside... heard a noise... thief stole a laptop and jewelry...

People work around here so it makes for easy pickins when no one is home...

Many years ago, like 40 years ago, the local police said the best thing a homeowner can do is install double cylinder deadbolts which my parents did... they still have the Neighborhood Watch booklet from the police department.

Fast Forward and the Fire Department declared double cylinder deadbolts are illegal and subject to citation... even made a friend take one of his wrought iron fence gate...

Mom still has hers on the door...

Over the years of country living have noticed that each year when schools are out Easter, Christmas or other holiday the break in crime increases.
So far I have had a new car stolen (teen age girls) the police quit looking when heard who the drivers were.

Pick-up stolen and in process of engine being stripped out and happened that a game and fish dept. officer drove past the truck. the thieves ran into the woods. He stopped and the officer found ownership papers from glove box.
Being from different county he notified the local sheriff dept. . Name address phone # type of vehicle . Local Sheriff never had time to pick up phone and call to tell us where it was sitting.
Game and Fish Officer waited several days and called us at home and asked why we didn't come and get the pick-up told him 1st notice we had of location. Loaded the pick up on trailer . no wheels, engine loose in the frame . tools and radio's all gone.
Then returned after being gone for several days and the rear steel door with safety locks . was laying flat on the floor .the thieves had broken down the frame to get in.

Used to have in this county one State police man for traffic control
one sheriff and didn't need extra help. filled in for the city during holidays crowds in city.

Also used to know everybody and there vehicles in the area now don't knew 1/10th of who is going past the house.

In the sixty's the hippies moved in grew a little weed to keep the feeling of what ever going in there head

Returning Military from Viet Nam . had to have the drugs they had become used to in "Nam" .

Then all the different type of drugs now being pushed . Kids are zonked before getting to school. and are bored by school and roam when don't have to attend.

Now there is more family's needing assistance because no jobs (cannot pass the drug test)

So what is the future other than more crime.

Don't know if drugs are related or not...

The house next to my rent house had more and more bicycles piling up in the yard... maybe 60 or 75 over the course of 6 months... very strange.

I pull up one Saturday and see police next door... come to find out the 10 year old boy that lived there had stolen ALL those bicycles and had been caught with another 10 year breaking into a house on the next block...

His mother was screaming at the police about her little boy...

Shortly after they moved to get away from the bad elements... her older 17 year old had an ankle bracelet...

The mom reminds me of Ma Barker... when she was questioned about all the bikes in the yard she said she goes to work and comes home and NEVER sets foot in the backyard...

No drugs involved...

Anyone I know that came home with something that didn't belong to them would have a lot of explaining to do...

When I was 10 a family a couple of blocks away was getting rid of things prior to moving... I had helped move boxes and the Dad gave me an old 10 speed... that night, my Father put me in the car with the bike and drove over to the house to make sure it was legit...

It's getting pretty bad everywhere (getting a job requires getting one's butt out of bed in the morning)...We finally got "Castle Doctrine" in Wisconsin a year or so ago. Only works if you are home of course but because of it, I don't worry about having to call 911 (average response time +/- 25 minutes). I read somewhere that the first sound an intruder should hear is not "halt" but instead "bang". Sad that it's come to that but reality is what it is.

So why do you let your Fire Department dictate security to you? Double cylinder deadbolts can be smashed with a ram just as easily as a plain deadbolt; so their legal position doesn't pass the common sense test. Put it on the next ballot to have the "law" removed.

- To keep yourself on the right side of the bars, you should always tell the intruder to "Halt", "Freeze", "Don't move", etc.
- If they run, don't shoot them.
- If they come at you, feel free to acquaint them with what a projectile at a few thousand feet per second feels like.
- Don't fire a warning shot, the MSM freaks out over where that bullet could end up. For some reason they aren't as upset if the first bullet goes into a bad person than they are if it's flying around the area.
- Once they're down, you're not permitted to finish them off unless they're still armed and trying to get you.
- Call 911 when it's safe to do so. If it's before they're inside, just leave the phone line open.
- I don't know of any state that requires you to render first aid to the bad guy. For your own safety, you should stay out of arms reach of them.
