Tractor
Yanmar FX255D
I am looking for a clutch pack for my Yanmar FX255D, four wheel drive, automatic transmission, grey market tractor. If I can't get the exact part, is there an after market part that I can use in its place? Would appreciate any input anyone has to offer on how to find this part or its replacement. ( odyssey_ranch@yahoo.com ) Thanks, Wayne

google Yanmar fx225d clutch and you will get a bunch of hits. Although they don't show it under the F255 I would think Hoye would have it.

Clutch pack is an unusual request. How do you know it is bad?

We were told we needed a "clutch pack" since it is an automatic transmission. We checked with Hoye, since that is where we got the tractor from years ago, and they stated that the parts are obsolete and no one carries them. It is hard for us to believe that no one out there has this part or some replacement part.

We currently have the tractor with a mechanic. Although he has not torn the tractor apart, he believes from the symptoms of the tractor, that a clutch pack is the issue. Basically, the tractor will only move slowly forward or backwards under high RPMs. It is an automatic transmission. Could it be something else wrong with those symptoms? The mechanic is afraid if he splits it open that the clutch pack will come out in pieces.

To my knowledge no one has ever had to replace a clutch pack on a Yanmar. I would guess the only availability would be salvage. I assume your "mechanic" has eliminated the regular drive clutch.

We currently have the tractor with a mechanic....The mechanic is afraid if he splits it open that the clutch pack will come out in pieces.

You might consider a different mechanic. That's not meant to be snide, but if the Powershift assembly is damaged sufficiently that it "comes out in pieces" that cannot be assembled, it is either physically broken or the mechanic is inexperienced and unfamiliar with this transmission system. I'm not familiar with it either, but the basic principles of operation are relatively straight forward. The gear shift controls a valve that routes fluid to the different clutch packs that engage, under hydraulic pressure, to select each different speed.

If the hydraulic system is compromised (Through contaminated fluid, corrosion/oxidation, clogged filters (Probably two on your FX255D) or a stripped hydraulic pump coupler, then it is possible the packs will not be sufficiently activated to function properly. If the shifter valve seals leak a similar event could occur, as could the relief valve for the Powershift system; apparently they are known to have hung open on a contaminant.

The diagnostic procedure for isolating Powershift issues is in the service manuals for the US market machines; I imagine the YM276 would be similar enough to be useful. While speculative (Since I don't have a manual), I would begin with removing the suction screen and thorough cleaning it, then replacing the screw on element as well. Hopefully that alone would resolve the issue. If not, I would move on to the valve and inspect/replace the seals and verify the pump coupler is in good condition. If all those items are in proper condition, then the only option would be the clutch pack(s) themselves, and those will likely be the toughest to repair or replace.

As was pointed out, it may also be an issue with the dry clutch, operated by the clutch pedal. I'm certain these are available more or less off the shelf, and will be much more "normal" for a tractor mechanic to service.

Thank you for your insight and in depth look at the problem. No offense at all taken by finding another mechanic. This is a point actually a couple people have mentioned the same. Just because you have a shop and work on all type of diesels engines, that doesn't make you an expert on all tractors! I really appreciate the thought that it could in fact be something besides the clutch pack. The reason that I say that is that after many hours looking for the part, it doesn't seem to hardly exist out there, and if it does, it carries an extremely HIGH price. The mechanic it is currently with, basically indicates that it is a large paperweight and will probably continue to be so since the FX255D model is extinct and automatic transmissions are a more complex fix then standard manual trans. That being said, a Yanmar mechanic (in another state- Texas) I spoke with a couple hours ago, needs me to test the rear power takeoff under pressure to see if it has power or not. I guess by doing this, it can better tell him what would be the best direction to go with the tractor as far as repairs goes.
It is also possible that it could be a powershift relief valve spring. We are going to go get the tractor back and start going through it and test the rear power takeoff as also suggested. Then, go step by step as you detailed, to see if we can get this problem fixed. Again, I sincerely appreciate all of this input.
