Do/Did you let your under aged kids drink alcohol?

wine and beer on special occasions till they were "legal" .... family get togethers, special occasions ...

when they were legal, told them to never drink and drive ....
I told them to call any time , day or night from anywhere if they were drunk and needed a drive ... I would get them , no questions asked or reason required ...
had to do it only once for each of them ... both are good members of society now.

I was raised like the old school farmer examples. I raised mine by modern day rules. Both worked, none have gone to prison, gotten a DUI, or been in rehab.

Be the parent you want your kids to be and all will be well.

I was not allowed to drink, nor will I allow my children to drink in my home.

I come from two families of alcoholics. I don't know now many of my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins either drank themselves to death or killed themselves and others in wrecks while intoxicated, simply because I've lost count.

My mother took my brother and I to my grandmothers house to clean it up after she had been on a bender for about 2 weeks. We filled up the back of my dad's old F100 with aluminum cans.

I am thoroughly disgusted with alcohol and the abuse thereof; aside from the enormous economic impact, it would not bother me at all to re-instate prohibition.

I don't think that alcohol is inherently evil, but it seems that it heavily influences many of its consumers to use it that way.

Good luck and take care.

From what I recall of my friends and acquaintances back before we were of legal age to drink, the ones that were allowed to have a limited amount to drink in their homes seemed to handle alcohol much better later in life than the ones who were never allowed any consumption of alcohol until after they were of legal age.

I am sorry to hear about your family and respect your view of the subject, but there was a reason prohibition was abolished. Many of the same reasons legallized marijuana is slowly creeping it's way into our lives.

The evils that come from a substance being illegal outweigh the evils that come from the substance itself sometimes.

I am following this thread with great interest. My children are still young and I am still undecided on this subject. Nice to see others' opinions.

Nope, won't condone it and even just a tasting is saying it's ok. I'd hazard a guess that alcohol ruins more lives than guns yet is controlled much less because we don't hear about it in the media. Like rtimgray, I have witnessed first hand the ill effects on the drinkers and the non-drinkers. Most likely no one would be successful in convincing me that any age is ok to drink it because it will eventually control you...

Did you mean to say "it will eventually control me"? Surely you're not suggesting that anybody who takes a sip becomes a dysfunctional alcoholic?

Nope, and no. I know several "functional" alcoholics; worked with some and related to a couple. Some have already succumbed to the long term effects of alcohol consumption. A by-product of your liver beaking down alcohol is formaldehyde. A chemical used to "preserve" tissue, but not in a living state. It's not my say-so as to who can or cannot drink, I was simply stating that in my experience it has not only shortened the life of drinkers and non-drinkers in my circle of family and friends but it has also NEVER resulted in any good outcome.

In the case of the non-drinker injured in a wreck with a drunk, she is now "controlled" or limited because of it. In the case of the drinker (functional or dysfunctional), they are controlled when they can't get by without it. Call it social or whatever neat name they prefer, it is still controlling if it can't be avoided. Even the one-a-day drinker is controlled because they have one-a-day. No different than tobacco or any other "drug," illegal or legal, socially acceptable or not.
